I was thinking of meeting the family for a reservation to see the Elephant Seals at Aņo Nuevo. Does this route sound fine?

Page Mill -> Alpine -> Pescadero -> Highway 1 South

On the map it looks fairly straightforward. Any road hazards I should be aware of after the Page Mill portion?

Route path (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1507054)

Thanks.

A better route would be: Just before Pescadero, turn left onto Cloverdale Rd, bear right on Gazos Creek Rd. to a left on Hwy 1, continuing to Aņo Nuevo.

Perfect. That was what I was looking for, some local knowledge. Thanks.

+1 on Cloverdale/Gazos Creek

But you NEED to stop at Arcangeli's Grocery in Pescadero for an amazing croissant or a chunk of their delectable artichoke bread. There be some serious yum-age there.

Archangeli's is on Stage Rd., about a block north of Pescadero Road. There's a porta-potty near the picnic area behind the store.

Then you could double back a little ways to get on to Cloverdale Road. It adds only a mile or two to your route. And it's worth it.

(Ed to add): Here's a map I once drew up for a friend who was staying at Costanoa (close to Aņo Nuevo) who wanted to ride up to Pescadero. It shows Archangeli's and the route SteveE suggested.

+1 to Arcangeli's and the artichoke bread! If you're in the neighborhood it is unbelievably good.

Your trip reminds me of my ride down to Santa Cruz to see the Monarch butterflies last month. Family drove, I rode. It's a fun trip. 'Course, I didn't have to climb Page Mill :o ...

Wow. What a great ride.

It did seem somewhat spooky how some parts were really quiet.

My poor road bike that gets used approx. 2-4 times a month. Most of my miles are on the Xtracycle now...

At the top of Page Mill at the Monte Bello area. (I thought it was only a 4 mile climb... oops!)

Some shots from Alpine road portion of the trip. Am I still in the mid-peninsula? When did I run into Muir Woods?

Finally, 48 miles later, at the visitor's center in Aņo Nuevo.

And yes, I did stop in Pescadero for some excellent lunch at the market/deli. On the way back, I picked up a loaf of the Artichoke bread. It was good.

Thanks for the tips on riding this route.
