Currently I am using Mavic Crossmax SL discs and they are over three years old now and are back in the shop. They have been a good wheelset, but I am thinking it may be time to replace them due to broken spokes, hub issues, etc. I am looking for a good, reasonably priced (less than the new Mavic's), LIGHTER, as durable or more, replacement wheelset that will stand up to 3 to 4 hour epic, rough, trail rides and the occassional race. I would like to spend $600 or less. The wheelset must be tubeless, disc, etc. I would like something in the 1600 gram or less range. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Freddy
Like you, my new wheels had to be UST, and disc. Light and durable. Oh the options..
currently running Mavic XL disc, but needed new wheels for the new bike.
I had wheels built for me. Originally I wasn't considering this, but after looking at the options
of weight, cost, durability it became an attractive option.
Hope Pro II hubs, Mavic x819 rims ( UST DISC ), and double butted spokes with alloy
nipples. I chose all black, but the hubs have many color options.
These are as light as my Mavic XL discs , and seem just as stiff.
Cost was around $550 for frnt and rr.
Have 'em built!

At one point this link also had Mavic 717's but this still seems like a heck of a deal: WHEELS (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=5337)

So with this wheelset you would have to also get a Stans tubeless kit to make them tubeless? I failed to mention that I weigh 190 LBs and am a relatively strong rider, so I would assume I might be pushing the envelope on the low weight / high durability issue. I like the way the new Crossmax ST's are described/look, 1650 grams (lighter than the Crossmax SL's that I currently have), designed for all mountain riding which is mostly what I do, BUT I DO NOT LIKE THE $750 price tag and the potential pitfalls of the Mavic reliability issues.
Keep the opinions coming.
Thanks,
Freddy
X819's do not need a stans kit.
