Commuting - Sun Glare

How does everyone handle the sunglare this time of year? I was thinking of making a brim to put on my helmet, any suggestions?

I used to just time my departures to avoid the worst of it, say leave 15 minutes earlier or later, but there was really only one spot where it was bothersome and that is at an intersection I have to go through with turns on and off from an interstate highway.

If you're dealing with glare for a lot of miles, I wouldn't worry about you, I'd worry about the drivers not being able to see you. Polorized sunglasses help cut alot of the glare out on the roads, but drivers aren't always wearing them.

Hi jfz,

I wear a helmet that has a detachable brim and I also wear sunglasses. As Jay pointed out, the biggest concern is other people seeing me in the glare.

I always wear a MTN bike helmet that, besides having lots of cool stickers on it, has a brim. I forgot my sunglasses on Monday and the ride home would have been a real punisher if not for the brim. As it was it was just annoying unit I got into the neighborhoods. Now my sunglasses are another item that I touch in my pack before leaving in the morning.

Granted it's not as smooth as the road bike helmets, a mtn bike helmet is wonderful. Find a pair of, either, polarized sun glasses or a pair of lightly colored sun glasses. I have a pair of smoke tinted glasses that work wonders.

There are aftermarket visors you can get that velcro on to most helmets.

For summer riding i made & installed a neck protector (think Foreign Legion) out of lightweight white cotton muslin attached to the rear quarter of the helmet just below the vents.

I fasten it with staples all along the top edge, which make it secure but also easily removeable for laundering (it gets sweat-stained). With some more work you could rig it to attach with velcro.

These additions make riding a lot more pleasant. The visor also helps keep rain & snow out of your eyes.

Sunglasses. These are also useful for keeping dust and other particles out of your eyes when riding at all times of the day. In fact, I've even got some clear lenses for mine so I can wear them at night.

Sunglasses here. They're good against bugs, too.

I taped an American flag on my rear fender stay today in rememberance of 911, it also makes me more noticable to drivers approaching from behind.

I was all set to ride in this morning with a 11"X18" flag on it's little pole sticking out of my back pack. Bad weather predictions made me change my plans and drive in. now i'm a bit grumpy. I'm glad to hear you flew the flag for us.

Speaking of visibility, i see some utility cyclists sporting those tall flexible flagpoles with dayglo orange pennant on top. Definitely catches the eye altho may be too geek for many.

Of course you do wear eye protection ..right???? ...Get polarized.

btw: Please stay out of the glare of motorists! You're safer to ride in full darkness with lights than to ride into the setting sun while being passed by cars driven by half blinded drivers.

i wear prescription Photograys, they are great. Got sick of losing prescription sunglasses.:->

i had the glare facing my front, so i couldn't see ahead. then i crashed head on with another cyclist going the oposite way. didn't feel anything.
