Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

One of the joys of wine tasting is finding a really nice wine for less than $10 a bottle. Granted, sometimes you get some dogs. Found a nice 2004 Chianti Classico Lamole di Lamole at Trader Joe's for something like $9 (definitely less than $10). 2004 is a great year for chiantis. Super value for a classico. I am now sipping a 2005 Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) that a got at Costco. It was $11.99 but $2.50 off with a coupon ($10 off 4 bottles). Awesome!! What are some of your finds?

Oliver, several types, from an Indiana vineyard. They also make Mead! :D
My parents get some stuff imported from Hawaii called Maui Splash. It's $10/bottle.

Gala Rouge Pinot Noir.
Mirassou Pinot Noir.
Both are honest little wines. Not bad for the fact that they're $11 or less.
Charles Shaw. It's $1.99 at Trader Joe's and it's literally won awards. I've never had it, because Trader Joe's doesn't exist in the South. :(

Maybe I had a bad bottle, but I found it the Two Buck Chuck Cab undrinkable - the drain had drank the remainder.

Don't fret, with the up Chuck shaw, you're missing out on nothing other than an awful drinking experience and a massive hangover the next day. Trader Joes is great, that stuff is vile.

Rosemont makes a Reisling you can get in the South-East for about $7 a bottle. Not the best but good for the price.
Insatiable Cab (I'm not crazy about Insatiable's other wines) - $8.99
Casillero del Diablo Caremenere- $9.99 (one of my all time fav wines. we buy cases occassionally)
JanKris Crossfire blended red table wine - $8.99
Big House Wine, also a blended red - 9.99
Tempra Tantrum Tempranillo - 8.99
McMannis Cab 9.99
These are what's sitting in the kitchen at the moment for drinnking the next couple of days. I love to go to the wine store with a dollar amount in mind to stay below and just see what I can find. Yesterday it was a mad house and such fun. Lots of folks on the same mission as myself, the store had extra staff on hand, and I ended up spending well over an hour just chatting, choosing and having fun!
Two-buck is a blended red. Nothing wrong with a blended red if its done well. Two-buck is quite unreliable though...one bottle might be quite drinkable while the next is total ****.

Not under $10 but my store had Duck Pond Pinot on sale for $15.99 yesterday. Along with Domaine Coteau, its one of my absolute favorite Oregon Pinots.

Prices can vary by state. Here in Ohio because of high alcohol regulations (state minimum markup, taxes) Two Buck Chuck (charles Shaw) sells for $2.99 - $3.29.
FYI The "secret" behind winning awards for a two dollar bottle of wine is, they buy surplus grapes for other vinyards. Sometimes these are great, sometimes not. If you buy a case you could have a bottle like a $40-50 bottle, and in the same case a bottle that might be worth $1.

We have one in Charlotte, but I've never been because when I shop, I don't like having the management and staff playing "Let's Pretend." I mean, WTF?
Tempra Tantrum Tempranillo - 8.99

Not under $10 but my store had Duck Pond Pinot on sale for $15.99 yesterday. Along with Domaine Coteau, its one of my absolute favorite Oregon Pinots. That seems to be the lowest price for decent Oregon Pinot, Duck Pond is a great value at that price. You will also see Willamette Valley Vineyards and Eola Hills Pinot on sale for that price, if you do, buy it, it's good.
BTW, Eola Hills runs bike tours from their Salem, Oregon winery, ride to all the wineries in the area (35-45 mile rides), they follow with a sag, so if you buy wine along the way they take it back to the start for you. At the end of the ride they provide a grilled salmon dinner with wine. It makes a very rich experience on a nice Oregon summer day.
I like a good Tempranillo, Abacella Winery makes a great one, I don't think you'll see it at discount. I'll look for the Tantrum, Thanks!
Thanks also for the blog, it's always nice to avoid unpleasant surprises ;):D

Mirassou Pinot Noir.
+1
They make a good riesling too
I just saw a ton of good french and italian wine for less than $10 at Trader Joe's.

I've had Eola Hills and enjoy it. It's regularly on sale at our favorite wine store which is nice.
Abacella is "next door" to my sis-in-laws place and we love their wines. We are in their wine club but haven't chosen the last few shipments. Thier Grenache was absolutely amazing a couple of years ago. We had one sip and immediately bought a case LOL! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE their Viognier. It helped me rediscover white wine. I agree, their Temranillo is beautiful. We were bummed that we'd only gotten one bottle on our last visit there.

I can not remeber which, but one of the two buck chucks was quite drinkable, but far from award winning quality. I found one other what was very useful. Very acid, not drinkable, at least not if you want to enjoy wine. But perfect as part of a tenderising marinade!
I'm partial to Estola Reserva, A nice Spanish wine that Trader Joes has from time to time. But last time they had it I took a case, leaving only a couple of bottles.
I also found Casaterra(sp) Malbec interesting. A nice earthy wine that went well with duck or other game type animals. This was years ago and due to currency rates it was just 2.99 at TJs. (Oh what a difference a dollar makes!)

Roseburg's climate seems perfect for the more full bodied and friuty wines, Abacella is taking full advantage and adds nice bit of variety in Oregon. The 2006 wines are turning out very well, maybe a case this year?
OK, we are off the $10 topic here, sorry!:o

Santa Ema is good and cheap. The 60/40 cab/merlot is quite tasty. Costco and TJ's sell it usually under $8.

Heh - yeah, I started a thread like this a while back. ;)
For reds - check out Rex Goliath l(or "giant rooster", lol - named after a 47 pound rooster here in TX). I really like Kendal Jackson's Savingon Blanc for a white. If I serve it to other people a lot of them look at the glass after their first sip and say "what is this?".
Just popped a bottle of Carro Tinto which I got on sale for $7.99 a few days ago. Quite lovely....blend of 50% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah, 20% Tempranillo, and 10% Merlot.
Happy x-mas eve!

After doing the merlot and pinot noir thing for years (not that I have anything against them, mind you ;)), I've been developing a fondness for old vine zinfandels. They tend to be richly berry-ish and lush. One of my favorites is Twisted Zin 2004- less than $8/750ml, and if you can spring a little more than $10, you can get a 1.5l bottle. Here's a site that reviews a bunch of zins- you might find it useful: http://goodcheapwine.info/ZinfandelReview.html

It's called moonshine. You can make it on your stove.

Quality moonshine actually takes a lot of time and skill to make. Stove tops aren't really cut out for making it.

I just got a pretty good deal on a few bottles of Warre's Warrior Porto. Got it for $12.97.
It really is one of the best port wines I've had. It's really good for everyday drinking. No need to pair it with dessert.

I buy local from a winery named Linganore. Most all of thier wine is less than 10 dollars. My favorite is a Pinot Noir style called Black Raven.

Eh, I don't drink so I wouldn't know.
Although, I do wonder if the brita filter trick would help cheap moonshine.
Osborne - Out of Spain. Cabs, Zin, Merlots usually $8-$10

The Britta filter trick doesn't work at all, at least according to Mythbusters. A good friend of mine who is a moonshiner charcoal filters his, and it's excellent.

My everyday wine is Black Opal cab/shiraz blend (the purple bottle). I like it a lot. I think it's $8.99?

I can't drink Charles Shaw. I buy a bottle once every couple months because people rave about it and every time, I end up tossing it out...

I like that one alot also. Another one I like is Big House Red - a blend (not even sure what of) from California for the same price.
I recently had Columbia Winery Cellarmaster's Riesling in Texas. I got a bottle at a local store for around $12... mmm good stuff, although it seemed to taste better while I was in Texas. Maybe it was the food... or the good company. ;)
This one is a bit more than $10 (it's $21) but you've gotta love the vibe!
How it's described by one critic:"Full of smoldering desire - for adults only!";)

Old vine red zins are about as good as it gets for my taste. I wish I could afford to buy Ridge wineries on a regular basis.
