Hey,

When shifting the rear derailleur on my bike I've noticed that I can shift perfectly when on the smaller 4-5 cogs, but as soon as I move towards the top 3-4 cogs it seems as though the cassette and the derailleur become misaligned. This causes the chain to twich back and forth between cogs. When on the largest cog if I hit my index trigger to shift into a smaller cog the chain doesn't move. I have to hit the index twice and then it shifts off the top cog and down two but still tries to jump onto the second from the top cog. As I move down to the lower 4-5 though the alignment is perfect, the shifting is smooth, and I have no problems. Can anyone suggest what I might do to fix this? I have a SRAM 8-speed rear cassette with an alivio rear derailleur and Shimano 8-speed rapidfire shifters. Thanks!

Most likely, your derailleur hanger is bent. Most any decent bike shop will have a derailleur alignment tool. If your hanger is the replaceable kind, it's most likely made of aluminum (designed to break in lieu of damaging the frame), and can only be straightened so many times. (high fatigue of aluminum). It's a good idea to always have a spare hanger in your tool box.

I'm not entirely convinced that is the problem... this is a brand new hanger. Maybe the point where the hanger mounts is slightly off line... hmm.. I'll have to check that out. Any other suggestions?

It's too difficult to diagnos on-line. From my experience, if there is smooth shifting in half the range, chances are the hanger is damaged or the derailleur cage is twisted. The only way to verify this is to take it to a shop and have them check it.

It could be your B-Limit screw isn't set properly. That's about the only other thing I can think of. The B-limit is on the back of the derailleur. See www.parktool.com there is a section there that helps with repairs.

Thanks for the advise a2psyklnut! I appreciate it... Now I'll just have to check to see if there is any damage to the rear hanger area (bought the frame slightly used so it could be that it was whacked on a stump or a rock and bent).
