This winter I am building a commuter out of a gaspipe Torpado. I want to put on some fat tires and I will probably go with the Tufo Diamonds. They come in a 28 and 30 mm size. I have more than enough clearance in the bike and reach in the brakes to accomodate either tire. Should I choose one over the other? More info about the Tufos here:

I have the 28's and I can tell you that they really are 28mm wide. They only clear the chainstays on my Peugeot PX10 by about 3/16".

I favor a wider tire for commuting, particularly in winter, so I would vote for the 30mm width, all else being equal. Also note that various manufacturers differ in their concept of tire width -- my Bianchi will accommodate up to 25mm tires from most manufacturers, but 28mm Continentals, which are more like 25.5mm wide.
