I've been to wilson quite a few times, but I think today I was the clearest I've ever seen it. The view was honestly incredible. Seeing boats out on the ocean is somewhat common, but seeing the surface texture of the water (with enough detail to see the coastline of the Palos Verdes Peninsula) was pretty amazing.
I hope other people in the area were able to make it up there today.

The few times I've ridden there, I couldn't even see the ocean. I'd love to have a clear view for once.
The view from Malibu was extraordinary.
EDIT: I had a lot of opportunity to see it. Cassave and Thomson got sick of riding with the gimp so they dropped me and left me to the views. ;)

Oh baby, that's harsh.

Oh Clint, you know you are physically incapable of riding that slow! :p ;)
OK...which one of you guys is the retro-grouch with shifters on the downtube?
I'm in Detroit, but my GF rode her road bike up Chaney Trail to Wilson today. She was on the small Bianchi if you saw her.
PAA did a training ride up there today.
how was the drive to the top and bottom? Hopefully your car didn't die up those climbs
Bitignduck: We actualy did see her up at wilson. We were hanging out enjoying the view and she rolled by us.
Merckx: We saw them descending down as we were on our way up. Were you there?
Ovo: My car overheated and I was forced to abandon it. Have you considered hooking a trailer hitch to the back of you bike and towing cars as a side job? We could have used your help.

ya but I charge an overweight passenger excise tax...since you'll be sittin in the car weighing the whole thing down
Chaney trail to Wilson is dirt isn't it?
Was up at the top of GP today...and it was incredible..both toward the valley and LA...could even see Catalina!!
Yep, Chaney to Wilson is dirt... Coulda been a Cross bike, I didn't get a close look?
Ovo: I'll work on losing some weight, asap :( What is the weight limit without being charged?
I'm sorry
It's not as bad as it sounds.

It's paved on the lower part of Chaney until you get to the Mt. Lowe Railway fire road, then you come out at Mt. Wilson Rd about 2 miles below the park entrance. It's not bad on a road bike- we do fire roads on them fairly often.

Nope. Her cross bike is in Canuckistan. It's a plain old road bike with 700x23 road tires. Works fine.
Hi,
I was up on Newport Coast and Spyglass today and the view north to Long Beach was spectacular too. :)
The weather was awesome today... clear skies and the mountains were in clear view!

Oops, I was thinking of Chantry.
Damn - I was supposed to ride up today, but chickened out at a unreasonably early start time. Every time I've done the climb, I've seen nothing but clouds at the top. Luckily, I'm taking all week off.
Oops, I was thinking of Chantry.
No- you probably had it right. It is fire road for a lot of it, but it's quite rideable.

Nah, I've ridden both, so I know that the toll road is more rideable on a road bike than Chaney. When I was thinking Chaney, I was wondering, "How the hell is that possible?" Chantry makes more sense, haha.

The toll road isn't rideable on a bike at all right now-- there's still a huge landslide just above Eaton Canyon, so you have to take a horse trail if you hike it. The fire road is closed.
I don't think there's even any obvious way up wilson from Chantry, at least not on a fire road.
Yeah, the toll road has been a huge mess ever since the very wet season we had like 4 years ago.

250lbs, you have quite a ways to go young padawan

At the healthy rate of 2lbs/wk, it should only take me 6 - 7 months.
What's a good spot to start a nice 40/50 mile round trip Mt Wilson journey? I live in Topanga, but don't want to ride across the valley to do it. You can climb Angeles Crest or Big Tujunga to Angeles Forest to Angeles Crest. To climb AC, just park near the 210 on AC itself, or uphill about a mile from the 210 is a park on the left.
I prefer to climb Big T, it's quieter and quite spectacular. You can park in the neighborhood around Oro Vista and Foothill, or park in the Sizzler parking lot at Foothill and Sunland blvd. This is at the Sunland Blvd exit from the 210.
There is a big ride up the Big T route on New Year's Day. My group will be leaving the Oro Vista area at 9:00. Join Us!
I put 8:00 as the start time for the 1st, should be 9:00. Yeah, I have that damn virus, too.
What group? Is this a traditional New Years ride? Do you plan on descending Angeles Crest?

My group is the SFVBC, but riders from all over the city do this ride. I'll probably descend AC, but I prefer Big T. You can start wherever you want, but some are starting at CSUN and some in Van Nuys and some at Foothill and Oro Vista. The racers usually start the climb around 10:00.

A heat wave! 2 years ago it was 32 at Red Box when we turned back because the road was covered with ice. Last year it was so windy I almost got blown to a stop more than once. I almost turned back on Big Tujunga.
Also last year one of the guys in the racer group had a vehicle pacing him up to Red Box as I was coming back down. Another car passed this sag car and almost got me. This was after I dodged a tree that had fallen into the road. Fun stuff.
This site says it's 30 up there now.

WOW. yea my boss was riding his mtn bike up near the Alpine Tavern/ Mt Lowe Campground when your girlfriend passed him like he was standing still. And he climbs pretty fast uphill. He was blown away.
So it is NOT a cross bike she rides? I was insisting it must have been. But whatdoIknow?
