I bought a pair of 26" Nokian 106's (studded tires, about 2" wide, $65 each!) for my eastern Ontario winter commute. They're great on ice, but on snow they stink - I slide even in a little soft snow over hardpack and bog down in a snow bank. Ice isn't really a concern, anyway - the real threat is ruts in the snow.
Can anyone suggest a better tire for these conditions? Should I just go for Mtb tires, and if so, what do I look for in a tread.
I've already asked this in the Winter Biking forum. All the discussions there are about biking on ice.
