Hi, I'm moving to Texas, looking at the Belton area for family reasons...is there a club in the area? What's the terrain like and are there safe roads for solo cycling? Any input, comments good or bad would be appreciated. See you on the road.....

Here are some links on organized rides in different areas, that may be some helpful reading:
http://www.bicycle-stuff.com/
http://www.bicycletexas.com/tx_bike_rides.htm
http://www.teamcure.org/events1.htm
Note that some of these links will give you ride routes for the events, which may be of interest.
You might also check at local bike stores for info.
Seems like there are hills in the area, but it's not the rocky mountains, either.
On the safe roads for cycling- I'm sure there are, just a matter of finding them. What I've noticed in the Dallas area is that you'll have some FM roads that are wide with nice shoulders, and then some with no shoulder at all, and you just can't tell from the map which is which. Do some exploring.
There is a linear park in Waco along the Brazos that looks like it might be some good riding; check into it.
My local library has a book on "Great Rides in Texas" (exact title may vary)- check it out for possible routes in the area.

Thank You for the info. Hills sound great after 2 years in the flats of southern Jersey.

Check out the website for Copperas Cove, which is just down the road from Belton, to give you a little idea of the riding.

If you pedal out west of Belton you can have all the hills you want.

This was a great help, I've actually started looking in the Copperas Cove area for a home now along with Belton. Thanks again

Andy White's "Best Bike Rides- Texas" includes two routes from Salado, one going east of 35, one going west. Check your local bookstore or library.
