so i got a pair of louis garneau montana shoes from santa this year and they are a size 50 which is my usual shoe size. they have a little room in them though. it's not bad, just a noticeable amount of room.

so my question is. is this a problem, do your have your shoes tight as can be or is a little room ok.

first cycling shoes by the way.

My shoes are 45's. . . and I could probably go with 44's, but I appreciate the very slight room in return for comfort. I heard that when you beat up your feet with all day riding they expand (get larger), therefore having a little space (or not such a tight fit) makes some sense. Some may say to go as tight as possible for efficiency, but what good is efficiency when your feet are aching, and ruining your ride. Hope you enjoy your new shoes.

Is there room for thicker insoles? How thick are the OEM's? I swap insoles around hiking/biking/running shoes quite a bit to optimize fit. They generally vary in thickness from less than 0.1" to almost 0.25" which seems like almost a half size to me.

I have one pair of bike shoes that were intentionally purchased a hair too big for traditional "silkweight" cycling socks (midweight to expedition weight socks only) and they have thick (almost 0.2") Superfeet Wintergreen cold weather insoles in them. Only my road shoes are too small to accommodate anything thicker than a lightweight hiking sock. The other three pair are all somewhere in between.

thanks for the help, i decided to keep them and will probably get a little thicker soles the ones in there are pretty thin. thank you guys again for the help
