The <£1400 TT/Tri Bike Thread

Mmm kay, so my financial situation is on the up currently, so I'm foolishly contemplating a TT bike (I also casually do triathlon, so I'd use it for Tri's too, of course).

I'm setting a cap of ca. £1400, which is US$2800 (though comparing based solely on currency exchange rate doesn't always work).

So ideas on the table:
Bianchi D2 Crono Triathlon Alu (http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=87042) - £1399 (though my LBS is a major Bianchi dealer and I might be able to talk them down on the price a little bit)

Planet X Stealth Carbon (http://www.planet-x-bikes.com/tt/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=216) - £1299

Planet X Stealth Alu, used, with DA 9-speed and 50mm carbon tub wheelset - £1199

Specialized Transition of indeterminate year, aluminium, full 105, been in my LBS window for years (could be an '06) slowly dropping in price - £1200 last time I checked, but I could very likely talk them down a little.

Or, even better, suggest something I ought to look at here!

Or, even better than that, convince me to save my money.

I’m not a real big Giant fan, but the Trinity Alliance A1 is a really nice bike with a decent spec sheet and excellent steep geometry for only $2100 over here in the US. Cervélo is also now selling their P2C in an Ultegra version for only $2500. I’m not sure how they price out over there, but either one of these bikes would probably be more than enough for you at your price point assuming they fit you correctly.

As for saving your money, I haven't figured out yet how to do it so I don't think I can help you out on that one.

After a lot of research I went way cheap/low budget and got a Fuji Aloha ( new on Ebay for a steal). Too early to tell performance improvements as only have 2 rides in, but I love the bike and it feels way more Aero than just Tri bars on my road bike.

As I train more and get speed up then will spend on wheel upgrades, but I have a way to improve the motor.

I know you can find great Cervelos - new and used for that budget. Many reccomended the Kilo and Equinox to me.


One benefit of the dedicated bike is you want to ride / train more so you back the bike up and not get laughed at :-)

you have a nice pile of cash to spend why settle on a Bianchi, Quintanna Roo is nice, Cervelo great for the money, Jamis make a great bike for under $2K american, Trek, C dale, Specialized all very nice....maek us proud and go nutz get something cool..:o

Well of course - there are plenty of options out there. Thus I was seeking the sagacious opinions of my dear BF colleagues. :)

Quintana Roo seems, at a glance, to have a pretty steep price hike crossing the Atlantic - so doesn't seem as competitive compared to the ones I've posted up above. Likewise, Trek, and to some extent Cannondale and Specialized, seem to cost a premium - when the frames do not seem to have significant advantages. But I'm open to anything. I can't seem to locate a Jamis TT bike for sale in the UK.

For what it may be worth, Bianchi, Cervelo, and Specialized are well stocked at my favourite LBS, so I may be able to get one through them at smallish discounts (along with the subsequent support). They even had, briefly, a P3 in their window custom painted in shop colours!

For whatever it may be worth, I think I'll probably get a Focus Izalco Tria for £900, then get some fly Planet-X 50mm wheels with the savings.
