Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I will be vacationing in Oahu with my family all next week and plan on biking around the island with my brother (we're 20 and 18 and fairly athletic.). It won't be our first time visiting but it will be our first time biking there. We've seen a lot of the main beaches and tourist sights but just want to explore on bikes to get a real feel for the island and the outdoors. I realize I know nothing about the trails there and would like some guidance about some good paths to take/places to go.

We'll be staying at Makakilo so any day-trip paths starting anywhere near there would be great. We're looking to stick to pavement as much as possible and go anywhere with a great view. We want a good workout that's fun and relaxing, so we'll probably take time to stop by towns/beaches for long breaks. So far I'm thinking we could go all the way up the west coast on farrington hwy and back as one route. Another day we could drive up to north shore(we'll have a car and bike rack) and follow farrington along the shore or out to kaena point.

So I'd like to know: How safe is it to bike on the highways such as farrington? I came across the official bicycle maps of Oahu (http://www.hawaii.gov/dot/highways/bike/oahu/index.htm)but figured I'd ask you guys who actually bike there. Also, what other scenic trails make for good day trips (for slow paced bikers)? Any comments, suggestions, or concerns would really be appreciated. Thanks.

yikes

but I am a huge chicken.

Can you get on to the Kaneohe Marine Corp base? The scenery is beautiful, they have a lot of ocean front and you can go out and actually cross the air field. (that is my big thrill) Bellows is open on the weekends to the public (east side), also beautiful. The north shore has some great roadways too.

We kill a lot of pedestrians here on Oahu with cars, and I take that as a sign, myself. I think we are number one in the country. We ride Kaleaneole highway. It is busy but ther is a nice bike lane and the drivers in Hawaii Kai are.....a bit tamer than certain other parts of the island. Watch for blind driveways. You can ride around Diamond Head, (Diamond Head Road) and then cut through some beautiful neighborhoods in Kahala on Kahala Ave, then take Kaleaneole highway to Hawaii Kai...lots of waterfront parks where you can watch kiteboarders and watersports along the way.

Hope that helps, I am weenie and have a low tolerance for too many cars, especially in areas where cyclists get no respect. (west side?)
