Bicycle Mechanics - SpeedPlay X2 Bearings

I need to rebuild a used set of X/2 pedals; one has a lot of slop side to side on the spindle (looks to be missing some of the bearing rods on the needle bearing, spindle looks good) and the other one is pretty tight due to rust under the grease cap.

I've read a few posts about getting new roller and even needle bearings from McMaster, but I have no clue what size bearings to get from them (and I'd rather not spend $70+ on the Speedplay complete rebuild kit). Has anyone ordered these from McMaster and have a parts list they can pass along?

Note: Do not try to remove the needle bearing from the X Pedal body. The needle bearing is permanently bonded in the X Pedal body and cannot be removed without damaging components.

Right, but when I disassembled the pedal, there were a number of the bearing rods (is that what they are called) that fell out loose from the needle bearing. Fortunately I was working over a workbench and caught them (12 in total) but it seems there may be 2-3 still missing. Is it abnormal for them to fall out like that? The needle bearing body of course remains bonded to the pedal body itself.

Not familiar with the Speedplay pedals so it's hard to say but,,,, usually rollers are caged and should not be loose. If there is a separator between each roller you can pretty much bet they aren't meant to be loose.

But the standard radial bearing numbers are listed in the instruction manual.

Older X2's took a HK1015 needle bearing containing 14 needle bearings.

Needles falling out mean bearing has failed and must be replaced.
FWIW Motion Industries lists an HK 1015 needle bearing from INA
for under $5. Judicious heating should loosen up the old bearing
housing for removal. Putting a new one on without destructive
results can be tricky. One approach is to pop the axle in the coldest
freezer you can find and heat the bearing to say boiling temp and
try sliding it on. Make sure you get it into the proper position as
that bearing will cool fast and shrink fit. If the needle bearing is
inside the pedal body then the surgery required is more extensive,
not in the category of rebuilding Shimano brifters, but more than
average skills are required. The rebuild kit may be your best bet.

I just purchased the rebuild kit and it was $30 (or $35) through my LBS.

There are several levels of rebuild kits IIRC, at least there were 4-5yrs ago
providing different parts. A google on rebuild kits for Speedplay pedals
brings up a number of sources and other fora comments that may be
helpful. The speedplay website does not seem to discuss rebuild kits in
any detail.
