View Full Version : A way to make cheap utility rack.

I needed a large utility box type rack for my tricycle so I could haul large bags of garden waste down to the compost plant at the recycling depot. Not having any money to spare from my weekly budget and needing a rack pretty quickly I made one from a $2.00 pack of assorted heavy duty zip-ties and a pile of discarded plastic coated wire rack shelves obtained from dumped refrigerators.
The mounting frame for my new utility rack was made from part of a steel tubing framed garden chair I found in the rubbish tip; - and it was even painted green too which saved me a job. :D

How about some more on the rest of the trike?

Yeah, what about the rest of the trike. Looks like you have springs on the front for a front rack too.

Not a problem, more tricycle pictures coming up :D
The springs on the front forks are for the fork braces which gives a semi-suspension effect as well as generally strengthening the fork. Very commonly found on 3rd World utility trikes and bikes these days, but were also used in the early part of the 20th century in the UK and Europe as well.

It's beautiful, but I'd be itching to take it back to stock condition.
Bring back the chain case!
Lovely ride there.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the 3rd handle/brake lever thingy?
Very sweet looking bike BTW.

I'd guess it's the throttle and all for the electric assist drive.

Yes that's the right answer! - give the man a prize :D
It's very easy to use and once underway I don't need to keep a hand on the throttle control. The hand lever acts as a clutch and disconnects power to the hub motor. Very useful when manovering in traffic. The original rod brake lever above it on the handlebars also operates a switch to cut the motor so it's not as if I have to be constantly moving my hand between them.
Front brake is the standard rod operated stirrup arrangement and it works very well. Any bad reports you might've heard about rod brakes is mainly because most folk don't know how to set them up properly or maintain them. The rear brake is a Sachs 'Duomatic' two speed coaster hub and it's a superb wee hub too :) I did have a Sturmey Archer three speed coaster hub fitted at first, but I found that the Sachs two speed hub could do the job just as well and it meant I had one less hand lever to worry about while on the move. I now gather up every Sachs 'Duomatic' hub I come across as they are a teeeerrrific hub to have on local use utility bike. Something I must do soon though is lace a wider rim onto this hub as it does look a little strange having a narrow tyre on the LHR. The asymmetric braking is not a problem btw.

For those of you worried that I might be doing awful things to a vintage tricycle, my Hercules was built in India by Tube Industries in 2005. Yes I know, my much loved tricycle lies about her age, but it's about the only way that I can enjoy the delights of riding a 'retro' tricycle without bankrupting myself by buying the real thing from circa 1906. Besides if I did own a genuine 1906 tricycle I would be too afraid to take it out on the road in case I damaged it.

Very nice ride there. And a lot of very clever modifications, Sianelle.

You've put this one in the E-bike forum before, but I still love it. For a new trike, its very classy.

Ok, we finally got Flying Pigeons for sale in the US... Next we have to work on Tube Industries to get those trikes over here too.

Found these (http://www.hiwheel.com/accessories_main.htm#saddles), they look good and have decent prices.
You should also check out the rest of the site (http://www.hiwheel.com/) if you're interested in old school trikes.
