Touring - Which fenders for LHT w/ 26" wheels

I'm leaning towards the SKS fenders but wanted some advice on size. According to Surly the bike will take up to a 2.1" tire. Would the recommendation be to go with the P65 which should handle a tire up to 2.25" or with the P50 which will take a tire up to 1.9"? I know it sounds like a silly question but it's the kind of stuff I fret over.

My guess is I should get the P65.

I'm using the wides Freddy's. I don't think there's much room for anything wider. Sorry I can't answer your question about SKS.

Have a look at the Planet Bike Cascadia fenders (http://ecom1.planetbike.com/7027_5.html). I have SKS fenders on my 700c LHT and they work well, but I had to add a mud flap to the front fender to increase its coverage. The Cascadia looks to solve that problem with built in long mud flaps front and back. I'll be putting a set on to my 26" wheeled Thorn touring bike.

P65's are REALLY wide. I'd go with the P50's. In the last 15 years I'm pretty sure I've used up P50's on all my 26" commuters with 2.1" tires & no problems.

I'd go measure you a set but won't be back at the shop until Sunday. Go with the P50s', the P65s are HUGE!

P65s will give you great coverage, but they are wider than either the fork or the seat stays on your 26" LHT. Since the fenders are plastic, you can pinch them to make them fit, but that kind of messes up their lines. I carved some indents in the right spots to fit them in place.

QBP has stopped carrying the cascadias, which is a bummer. i wanted silver fenders for my 52cm LHT, and the cascadias seem like the only option. Also, planetbike gives 25% of their profit to bike advocacy... if that does anything for you.

I run P65s with no problem on my LHT which has 26" wheels. They fit just fine. They just touch the forks. They do not touch the seat stays at all. Planet Bike sells those nice Cascadia mud flaps separately FYI. ;)

i run the planet bike fenders that vik mentioned and i love them. i have the 1.5" on but have 2 inch tires and they are ok too. got rid of the mud flaps and wish i hadn't, but the mud flaps were ugly.

anyway, i got the LHT complete and had to hack of the front of the front fender to stop it from interfering with the cantilevers. also, the metal attachment for the fender is a bit short so the fender kinda sticks up in the front, and hence inteferes with the canti. if you get V-brakes or a longer cantibrakewirepulling thing it should be ok. just my feedback on using those fenders

have never run sks fenders... no crap, its my first bike, first tour, first everything.

I have the atb cascadias over my 26x2.0 big apples. Looooove that mudflap (which is sold separately, as has been pointed out).

I too have p65s on my LHT with 26" wheels.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I went with black Cascadia fenders. Amazon.com had them for 39.99 with free shipping. They're now out of the black but still have the silver for $38.83 with free shipping.

If they don't come integrated with the fenders when I buy them I'm more inclined to just make some mudflaps from empty milk jugs. Not as snazzy looking, but you can make them as long as you want. From the pics of the Cascadias I'd still prefer if the flaps went closer to the ground on the front wheel, but the integrated flaps do look very nice.

+2 on the SKS P65. I am using 26 x 1.75 tires.

I added the PB Cascadia mudflaps to the set of P50s on my Pacer. The LHT currently has one mudflap for the front P65. It's a Headland mounted down to within a couple of Inches of the ground.

What is that saddle? Looks like a Brooks, but with a central cutout/slot?

I have P65s on mine. They pinch under the front fork just a bit, but no problem. I didn't carve any indents, and think they look fine. P65s are intended for 26" tires. I believe P50s are intended for 700c, so the curvature is a little different.
