Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Jumping In.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have been lurking for couple of months. I guess it is time to jump in. My name is Nathan, most people call me Nate. I am just getting into cycling. I was really starting to think it would be an enjoyable way to get in shape, and after seeing the before and after pic thread I was sold. Santa (my girlfriend) brought me a shiny new Allez for Christmas. I will be going on my first exercise ride in the morning.
I may be a perma Clyde at 314 and 6’, but I would like to get as close to the border as possible. This group has been a good influence in getting me started. Thank you all for that. I look forward to joining in, and getting to know ya’ll better. I would also like to join in on the spinner Saturday thread, if someone could let me know what I need to do for that.
Nate
Damn, she sounds like a keeper-welcome!
For the Spinner Thread just record your weekly miles Saturday to Saturday and report 'em in.
Also - you may want to swap the wheels on that for something a bit beefier if they came stock.

Welcome to the forums Nate, always nice to have a lurker come out and introduce themselves.
That was one awesome present Miss Santa delivered, if she don't have a bicycle already maybe you could pick her up one for New Years, that way you two can ride together and share the experience. Having a dedicated partner will help motivate you on the days you just don't feel like riding...that and drafting...I'll leave it at that ;).
If your new to biking the best thing I can think to tell you would be to drink often and stay at it. If your going to be riding on the streets stay alert, predictable, visible, follow traffic laws, and ride with the traffic. The people in the A&S forum will be "happy" to explain why. Everyone starts somewhere, it wasn't all that long ago when it was all I could do to ride a 3 mile loop. Oh, and my number one bit of advice to new riders is rubber side down. The rest is just details.

Hi Nate! bautieri's right--if your GF doesn't have a bike, perhaps consider getting one for her as well? But if you ever need anyone to remind you to get out there, we can do that too!
Welcome to Bike Forums!

Welcome!
I saw the before/after thread as well, and I agree it's inspiring. Some of those photos are incredible. I
hope to post some pictures in that thread myself. I've lost 20 or so pounds since mid November.
Anyway, definitely stick with it. For me, riding went from being exercise to fun in a matter of 1-2 weeks, and I can't get enough now.
I'm disappointed when I have to commute in my car.
Happy riding!

Nate, PM me an email address for the Spinner Saturday database....one you don't mind other members seeing. I will be sending out the invites to the 2008 Spinner Saturday database in the next couple of days or so. Make it one associated with a google account. If you need me to I can send you a gmail invite for this purpose as well. I'm now running the sheet online.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Tom PM sent. She is training for a marathon with Team in Training. She will run in Feb. She wants to get through that first, then I am going to get her a bike.
I made two miles this morning. I probably could have done more if I had eaten before going. I have issues with eating early in the morning; I need to get that worked out. I also haven't gotten a pair of cycling shorts, yet.
