Triathlon - In search of a good 1/2 IM plan...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This will be my second season of competition. Last year I started with Sprints, and finished with an Olympic. This year I plan to go sprint, olympic, 1/2, then repeat. Eric Harr's book served me well last year, but now I need something tailored to a longer distance. Right now I'm using the beginner 1/2 IM plan from beginnertriathlete.com, but was thinking about a book I found on Amazon, Training Plans for Multisport Athletes. Anyone have a good suggestion? (I'm currently reading the Traithletes Training Bible, but I'm not to the point where I feel comfortable designing my own plan)

Wish I could help, my "plan" right now, long and slow (65-70% max HR) until I regularly do 3hr rides and 1.5hr runs and then start adding in intervals early summer for a late summer Half Iron. Right now, with snow everywhere here in CO, its an hour on the trainer one day, an hour on the treadmill the next, rest every 7th day and start up again a fraction faster the next week. Swimming I'll start up in April with 2-3 a week for 30-45 minutes.
BTW, if you actually finish Friels book and put together a plan you should get college credit, I think i had easier Logistics classes in my MBA program.

Check out "Going Long" By Friel. It's basically a simplified Triathlete's Training Bible and focuses more on longer tris.

I've heard good things about "The Perfect Distance" by Tom Rodgers, although I cannot personally vouch for it.
I used the free 1/2 IM training plan available on beginnertriathlete.com for my first 1/2 IM last year and I believe if I had stayed a bit more true to it I would have fared a bit better. I slacked off a bit towards the end of the buildup because of a million things that took me away from training and was only about 75% prepared for the event (mentally and physically). Had I kept it up I believe I would have been 90% ready to take on a 1/2 IM. The only missing piece would have been the confidence and experience you gain from doing these longer type of events, which was the single biggest slap in the face for me.

I'm also about to start training for my first 1/2IM. I made up a schedule after beginnertriathlete.com
As for books, I heard good things about Joe Friel's Bible, I have to check that out too.

I have used "Training Plans For Multisport Athletes" it has everything from sprint to ironman training plans including Duathlons and Xterras. It is very easy to understand and the workouts are very well broken down. Good Luck with your 1/2 IM and your second season.
