TV free entertainment this Christmas

Like a lot of you who read this forum, I try not to be a vedge'd out couch potato in front of the TV/computer all the time.

I got some great stuff for christmas for keeping entertained in a TV-free manner-- a card game, Bohnanza (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/11), and board games, Blokus (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2453) and Mykerinos (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/21441)

In other news, I seem to have lost some points in the simple-living race-to-have-the-fewest-possessions. Which is fine by me, because these games are great. I haven't played Mykerinos, but I have played Blokus and Bohnanza and they are tons of fun.

This Christmas I've enjoyed sitting in front of the fire talking with immediate family and petting dogs.

We are STILL working through the presents as various family members depart and arrive:p My bride had to work 12/24-12/27 (flight attendant) I flew with her on 24-25, then was at my parents house with my kids on the 26th, then her parents house last night...Birthdays start today, so now for another round of parties and presents:D Out of 15 immediate family members we have 9 birthdays in the last week of December first week of January:eek: plus a couple of anniversaries:o

Mr. East Hill's birthday is on the 14th of January, so that's when the present(s) get handed out. We do a mutual exchange--kind of an 'end of the year, and Jim's birthday' celebration wrapped into one.

We've had a great time visiting my sister (married with one child & one a week overdue:eek:) and sister in law (married with 6 boys aged 7 and under :eek::eek:).
We've enjoyed presents, "Christmas Food", reading, relaxing, and some nice hot Glogg. try it, you might like it! similar to mulled wine but stronger:D
we do rent the occasional movie.... best recently was the last Die Hard. fun flick:rolleyes:

Looking forward to having Christmas coming up tomorrow. Been working 10 hr shifts straight through since Dec 19. Made for a very long week the last few days. But in the end the paycheck will be worth it.

Weather has been awful here since Thanksgiving, so I am reduced to reading and walking. No two-wheeling.

One holiday activity I enjoy is riding around the town at night looking at the Christmas decorations and lights. Tonight (New Year's Eve) is one of the last chances to do this, so get out there! We have lots of nice fresh snow that makes the lights even more beautiful.

I was given the best excuse possible for a TV-free Christmas by my sister: "Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography" by David Michaelis. An absolutely compelling read about my favorite cartoonist of all time. Nothing like a warm fire in the fireplace, a nice glass of tawny port, both cats curled up with me, and a good book. Television is one f**k of an intrusion at a moment like that.

I just pretend to be involved and pile all the crap in a corner until after Christmas and I'll work through it during the rest of the year. Too many angry, frustrated people trying to have a good time and find meaning in the meaningless Christmas commercial frenzy. My wife's family all try to do all the Christmas thing and end up miserable swimming in a sea of junk. I myself throw myself into cleaning/sorting and clearing-up all the Christmas mess, then take time when all is quiet to read/ride & reflect. This is my idea of Christmas and I find it really puts things into perspective

Nothing beats playing music with the family. My brother-in-law visited for a few days over the holidays; we jammed for hours. I've always thought that music leads to an understanding of others that can't be found any other way.
