What's your overall distance goal for 2008? On Bikejournal and BigDogs (both are distance logging sites) we enter what we hope to reach at the beginning of each year, so I thought I'd ask the question here too. :)

Every year for the past 10 years, my goal has been 10,000 kms. I've made it 3 of those years, and came really close 4 other years. The last 2 years I've really struggled with that goal because of my education and all the work I do, so maybe this year I'll lower my goal to 8,000 kms.

This year, my goal was 10,000 miles, and it looks like I'm going to miss it by 200 miles.

Next year, the goal is again 10,000.

My goal for '07 was 5,000 miles and it looks like I'm just going to make it. For '08, I'm thinking 7,500. Then, maybe the next year shooting for 10,000 (we'll see). I'm also thinking about doing a Century-A-Month program and possibly joining the local randonneuring club.

I've made the 10,000 mile mark several times. (many years ago) And to tell you the truth I don't know how I ever did it. I guess the biggest change to "goal miles" thing was that I started running competitively in 1984 so total road miles didn't mean as much as a measure of fitness activity.

Having a "total mile" goal is interesting. But I've come to learn that setting more focused goals that require more focused efforts can bring similar fitness results.

For instance, one of my goals since the 1990s is to always ride over 1000 miles in one of the Spring months, like April, May or June. Once you ride 1000 miles in a month, you're aerobically fit. You can get on with hard efforts and tougher workouts and rides.

I always train up to a point that I can ride a Century, solo, in less than 5 hours. Another cool goal would be go on a ride that provides a chance for a sub 10-hour Double-Century. I haven't done one of those since 2003.

As far as "total yearly anything" I add the mix of all my trainer, running and cycling workouts, add up the hours to determine my year-to-year work load. I've been averaging 7000 road miles for the last 6 or 7 years.

I'm not sure what I'll "go for" this year, but I know my first goal will be to ride the trainer for at least 30 hours in January while maintaining a 150-mile running base for the month.

This years goal was 3200, which I overshot by about a third (4600 & change). Low mileage months were July, August, and February.
Next year... I don't know, although I'm considering trying a brevet.
Since September I've had the goal of doing one metric a month and riding outdoors at least a little each day.
December's metric was the most ... interesting. Fuji 3 speed conversion w/ North Road bars, in drizzly 30's temperatures. Nothing extreme by the standards on this forum, but it seems a way to prep for a spring brevet (what clothes work, when/how much to eat, how to fix flats with chilly fingers, etc).
I used to be about the 20mph line, but found that for me, focusing on that takes away more than it gives. So I put the durable tires on the recumbent (my normal ride for anything over 25 miles), and disconnected the speedometer. Am happier now. I do log miles, but mostly use the old map & ruler method. Keeps it interesting.

Wow, that kind of rambled, huh?
Anyway, probably shoot for 4500 next year too. That's been my average for the last several, so why not.

I'll keep my 7000 a year but, increase the intensity considerably.

I have no specific mileage goal for 2008. However, I am doing the century-a-month challenge and want to commute to work at least twice every week.

In 2007, I did 5500 miles and averaged over two commutes a week. But did not maintain a minimum of twice a week.

I just calculated my mileage for 2007 and figure that I covered 16,000 km and was probably underestimating things.

In 2008 I figure that I might easily ride as far as 20,000 km... a road trip to Portland (1600 km) will have something to do with the extra mileage I put on and I also plan to do more century rides in preparation for that.

My focused goals:
commute every day to class, 90 miles per week for 18 weeks
200k, 300k brevet
century-a-month
possibly a 300 mile-or-so tour

That should put me around 3,500 miles there. If I add in miscellany, I'll be happy with 4,000 miles. I started riding in July, so this will be my first full year of biking. Sounds like a reasonable goal.

I just got back to LD riding in March last year. Did about 3000 miles for '07 and hope to double that this year. I would like to do a Super Randonneur and then I believe I'll be better prepared for London-Edinburgh-London in '09. Anyone else planning to do LEL?

6000 in 07 and 7000 in 08.
I rode about 9000 in 06 while getting in shape and that killed me. Hopefully, I can exceed my 7000 goal.

I'd like to do two 200k's and a 300k, as well as some bike touring in Italy. I guess with training included, I'll shoot for 7,000 miles total.

I am going for 5000 miles this year. Hoping to participate in the New Jersey Randonneurs Brevet series. But my work takes me out of town lot so we will see.

I started on June 23 of last year, and did a little over 3,600 miles. This year I plan to do 6,500 miles.

My 2007 goal was 6,000 miles, which I completed. Figure I'll raise the goal by 10%--going for 6,600 in 2008!

I've done 4,000, 5,000, even 7,000 but don't think I'll set a goal for mileage this year. I think the intensity of a ride is more thrilling. Last couple of years was cruising with the wifey. This year I want to get back into shape. Nothing like being a 220 lb rider and flying by other riders up the mountains!:D

Oh yeah, my goal is to lose the extra 30 lbs and add intensity back into the rides!:D

I usually do around 7,000 miles a year, I don't set a goal.

Goal ? Never had any goal. Guess I will target 7000 km, as I rode in 'PBP year 2003 (last year was 15 000 km plus distance on the racing and on the mountain bike, but this was a crazy year

I plan to aim to do at least 3,000-4,000 miles this year.
