Bicycle Mechanics - What maintenance is needed for a Trek 1500?

I have been searching under "maintenance" and some other words, and also browsing Sheldon Brown's site but have not found what I am looking for. I am sure there are some threads that will help.

I need to know what preventive or restorative maintenance my 2007 Trek 1500 requires. I used to ride 20 years ago and every few weeks I'd repack all the bearings, and always repack immediately after a ride in the rain. My bottom bracket had lightening holes in it, but really they functioned as a grease-drain.

So do I need to repack the bottom bracket, hubs or headset on this bike? Where might I find out if I have "sealed" bearings and what I need to do to maintain these bearings?

Bottom bracket maintenance has come a long way in 20 years. Pretty much leave it alone. Most everything else is just a matter of keeping it clean and keeping an eye on your chain wear.

on my 2004 trek 1500, everything has sealed bearings. if the BB fails you have to replace the whole thing. if the headset fails, there are two bearing cartridges that could be swapped out. Not sure about the hubs, the rims failed first, but it's probably similar to the headset. I had to take apart the brakes and lube the pivot points. Like the other person said, keeping the drive chain clean is the only regular maintenance.

You should have gotten a nice computer CD with the specifications and maintenance requirements for all the Trek bikes.

The OP has a 2007 bike....how much newer do you need it to be!

I guess I didn't think to look on the CD that came with the bike. The only thing it says for bearing maintenance is the need to re-grease them annually but they require special tools to do so. I have a boatload of bike tools, so I'd think I can do this myself. Maybe I will just have to take it apart and see for myself!

I did not get a CD with my new TREK FX 7.2, but did download the TREK manual from the link in one of the posts above. It is quite good and very complete, especially on adjusting the dérailleurs. I had read a lot of what it contains from other sources, too.

Ok, so how do I tell if I have sealed bearings? Stupid question, but the manuals only say that some bicycles have sealed bearings and do not need periodic regreasing. http://www.bike-manual.com/brands/trek/om/road/index.html
