And are there any thin spacers/shims that could be used to increase clearance between the flange/spokes and the freewheel body?

Careful there ... you're already working with less threads than usual. Don't push your luck too far.

hmmm...i have a friend who's done this and says it's a-okay. then again, he also rides no brakes/platform pedals and says "oh yeah, it's fine, i've done this for a few years"...but he's also been hit a lot.
