Winter Cycling - Question?

Anyone ever used these or something similar?

They would be very simple to fabricate and probably pretty cheap depending on the type of material used. Just wondering, because where I live it snows every once in a while but when it does it freezes more runoff on turns into ice.

I would imagine those are even more uncomfortable on hard surfaces than a proper set of studded tyres.

I would assume they work ok off road, when they're not ripping your derailure off but I see them presenting a huge amount of rolling resistance on pavement. I think they would be slippery on pavement also. I ride the Nokian mount and ground studded tires, they roll fairly well and grab on the ice like it's a dry streel, they also have enough rubber on the ground to be safe when you're on dry road.

I had seen those a couple years ago in an LBS, and haven't seen them since. I have a set of Nokian studds and love them. I've wanted to try out the "chains." Thought they might be fun for ice bike on the lakes here in the winter. There are a lot of different ideas when it comes to tyres and keeping bikes rolling in the winter. There is a group of cyclists who get together in the cold and race their "ice" bikes on a local lake. It's always fun to go watch.

Those look like TSL boggers made for 4 wheeling on trucks. The tread type looks idetical. Anyone ever use those for off road at all.

As with mrfix, I use a Nokian Mount and Ground only on the front tire. I do not bother with the back as I tow a trailer which keeps a lot of weight on that wheel. I have never gone down with just studs on the front wheel.
