meet my new seat tube. titanium isn't that tough after all.

the tire + dirt has definately flattened it. how much has this weakened the tubing? should i kill myself?

Most seat tubes have a gusset cut right through the wall for the seat post expansion and contraction. Not to mention water bottle holes. I don't see this being any worse, just wrap it so it doesn't get worse. Can't tell too much from the picture, but you are probably fine.

I think his concern is that it seems a little more invasive than a water bottle mount. Mounts are intentionally inserted and ring-reinforced, and tend to be smooth holes, rather than irregular abrasions.

I'll go with you on the actual, rather than the perceived or feared level of damage though. Looking at the tube diameter and making a quick estimate of abraded depth I'd say 0.2mm ish? You go with that? I can't see it being structurally debilitating.

I agree with you on the fear. But no penetration is a good deal, and some water bottle mounts are retrofitted without brazing, so the hole in the tube issue exists in a number of cases. Not so much a direct comparison but a situation that is easily understood as perhaps worse, and yet within the limits of the average ST.

No hole has to be stronger unless it really undermines a large are of the tube, and renders the tube under the spec of the thinnest wall alternative.

The deep scratch freaks me more than the polished area.

looks worse than it is.. the scratches are merely cosmetic and you can't really spot the flattened(polished) area when looked from the side
