I actually find the park tools web page to be sufficient for most of my needs. Throw in Sheldon Brown and this forum, and you have a pretty nice set of resources for free.

Park Big Blue Book (http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=19&item=BBB-1) and Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance (http://www.zinncycles.com/books.aspx?book=roadbike).

Sheldon Brown's website (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/) is also and excellent resource.

People always list the Zinn book in response to questions like the OP's. I have Todd Downs' "Complete Book of Bicycle Maintenance and Repair" (Bicycling--Rodale). I thought maybe I wanted to get a copy of Zinn, too. But, the reviews of Zinn at Amazon.com indicate a lot of folks give the edge to Downs over Zinn. They regard Zinn's treatment as uneven. Anyway, if you buy a bound volume (rather than a disc or using a web site alone), give some consideration to Downs, too.

these are books I've found useful... they are geared towards a visual learning style, with clear photographs and diagrams. some of the popular books seem a bit text-heavy and may be right for those who think best that way, though if you have to 'see' or visualize what you're dealing with or trying to do, I've found these to be the best (via my local library).

Bicycle Repair Manual -- (basic overview)
by Chris Sidwells

Complete Bike Maintenance -- (more detail/data)
by Fred Milson

The Complete Do-It-Yourself Bike Book -- (introductory)
by Mel Allwood

(I have links to these on a prototype Amazon e-store site though including such links to the books appears unacceptable given forum rules. otherwise would've sent links to more info on each book.)

update: (an indirect way would be to go to bicyclework.wordpress.com, a site I am in the process of developing, and click the above mentioned link from there. the site is not yet figured out, yet it goes directly onto the books.)
