Can anyone describe this?

I'm thinking of making Pacific Grove my first ever Trathlon.

Thanks,

Brian

The best analogy I can think of it that it's like climbing a cargo net. You grab the stalk of the kelp and pull yourself over it. Not sure if that makes sense. Another key thing to remember is if you can find some spots without kelp by only going off course a little, it will save you a lot of time.

I hear Pacific Grove is a fantastic event.

Pretty good description. The technique was developed for scuba diving when you have run out of air. I had to learn it, but never used it. Even with tanks empty it is much easier and faster to dive under the kelp. That is as long as you have the ability to do so. It is surely what I would do in competition. I'd also point out is is something you can train for in a pool. Just practice swimming underwater. My suggestion would be to use a dolphin kick with hands togeather in front, but other ways work. (Course I swam competitevely for over 10 years).

For many I would agree with the poster who said if you don;t have ot go too far out of your way avoid the kelp. But being able to swim under, for just one or two dives of 10 yards of so can often get you through the narrow part of a kelp bed in seconds where others spend minutes on top.

OH and biggest thing, you can always create a break in kelp with your hands. You might get tangled in hte sense that it is very very difficult to make progress, but if that happens you are still in no danger... UNLESS you panic.
