Mountain Biking - Platform Pedals

Hey all,

I postponed my clipless purchase till next year (a few weeks back) so what happens, my Shimano DX pedals break of course. I was pretty miffed as they are less than 2 years old and I don't have the proof of purchase. I didn't even ride these things hard offroad at all, 95% road riding, talk about crap.

Anyhow, I did a bit of research and narrowed my product selection of platform pedals down to:

Atomiclabs Aircorp
Brooklyn Machine Works Shin Burgers
Azonic A-Frame pedal
Easton Flatboy

The Easton are the only ones I can get at my LBS. I've called around almost the whole Chicagoland area and no one carries platform pedals of a high quality in stock. Anyhow, I'm leaning toward the Eastons ... anyone have any opinions on these? I'm a big rider and these things need to take some abuse.

Personally, I like the Atom Labs, but not the aircorps, I like the Trailkings. They have an oversized axle (14mm) and are built to be abused.

I do like the look of the Easton's, but I heard they develope a lot of bearing play and get real sloppy.

The Shin Burgers, just scare me!

I have been using the Brooklyns for over a year now and they work great. I have used them for every thing from light trail riding to DHracing and they are still in good shape. Even if they smack a rock they keep on going after taking a pice of the rock with them.:D

Yes I do have a few minor cuts from them but the grip is incredible even in mud. If you combine them with a shoe such as the Intense with the sticky sole your foot will never come off. It is almost like riding with clipless pedals.

I wish I could find a pedal that lasts more than 3 months. To date the best pedal I have had is Wellgo Sealed BEaring...otherwise I go through pedals every couple of months.

If I had a spare 150 I would easily get those bmw pedals :)

FUNN pedals are supposed to be really good too. I use 1664 BMX pedals http://www.1664bmx.com/products/beavertraps.htm
They are really grippy and I believe they have sealed bearings, I usually ride clipless on my other bikes, so it's important for me to have a grippy platform pedal, these grip like crazy, but the studs don't cut you up if you do slip. I had a pair of Wellgo platforms on the bike before, they lasted a week, these have been on there ever since with no problems.

I'd get the Azonic A-frames, unless I had lots of cash, then I get the Atom Labs.
