View Full Version : Bike Fanny Pack

I like biking to my local gym, whether it be one of the 3 school gyms on campus, or the local chain back home. It gives me a good warm-up and cardio, plus sometimes you just have to be an arrogant ass and bike with your shirt off after a good workout to boost your self esteem.

My problem is carrying all the little necessary things (I.D., cellphone, wallet, maybe some water/protein bar, multi-tool, patch kit). A backpack or my messenger back is out of the question as I don't want back-sweat to turn the thing rancid, plus the space is way more than I need. Also on long rides one of those addidas workout-drawstring bags really get annoying.

What I'm looking for is something I can attach to my bike, and detach with ease as I go in the gym. Imagine a fanny pack that clips on a bike's tubes. I was thinking a good place to put it would be the intersection of the top tube and seat tube, or the top-head-down tube area. (this is a seperate question upon itself, which location would get in the way of my legs less and thus avoid chaffing/scratching the hell out of em). An acceptable but less desirable alternative is behind the saddle, such as this

http://www.topeak.com/2007/products/bags/aerowedgepacks.php

These are less desirable because I want to have the bag where I can keep an eye on it in case it starts unbuckling or zippers come loose.

My requirements for the bag are that it be reasonably sized for a 50cm frame (wont have straps dangling near the cranks, wont be so huge that it significantly catches crosswinds). Waterproofing and multiple compartments are a definite plus, but not necessary. Reasonable price range is appreciated, and by reasonable I mean definitely not topping 50$. 30$ or less is ideal. Clamps/straps that dont scratch a frame would be nice, But I could always tape them over.

And obviously this thing has to be stable as hell when clipped in to the frame. Last thing I want to worry about is a 5-10 pound fanny pack whipping around my knees.

Anyone know of any good quality bags that fit this criteria? I feel like ive seen this type of bag around before but I dont know where to start looking.

I know I've seen bags that fit that description, velcroing to the corner where the top tube and the seat tube meet. I think a lot of people use em for chains, though I'm sure you could use em for your small necessaries.

honestly it sounds like, if you don't want to go with a saddle bag, an actual fanny pack would work out well. they can be purchased for under $5 at thrift stores and will hold everything you need with no big sweat marks. plus you can either sew a ulock "holster" on or, what i do, loop the strap around the shackle and you're good to go

The Topeak seatpack you linked to will do the job just fine. It won't start unzipping or come loose during a ride; they're very well designed.

Why not use an actual lumbar pack (I hate the term"fanny)? I have one made by Mountainsmith and it's fantastic. My mini u-lock even fits perfectly into the pocket in the pad. Holds a surprising amount of stuff, is very comfortable, very adjustable, holds two water bottles, and is supremely durable.

Get one of those triangle bags, and then just put the rest of your stuff in a detatchable bag inside of the triangle bag. Probably the smallest bags out there. I can't see why you can't put a grocery bag inside another bag and carry that from yr bike to the gym.

Another possibility would be a handlebar bag. They clip onto the front of the bars and hold more stuff than a saddlebag. Something like this http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23924&subcategory_ID=2312 would do you proper. Not the most stylish thing ever, but very practical.

^^i want to stay away from a bag as big as the lumbar bag mentioned. Not only do they cost a bit more, but I want something smaller that I can keep near my person as I work out.

Handlebar bag looks like a good option, style's not really a concern.

Any more ideas?

EDIT: Performance and Nashbar have some uber cheap bags. Found kind of what Im looking for at Nashbar

http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=600066&subcategory=60001006&brand=&sku=6799&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=Shop%20by%20Subcat%3A%20Wedges%20%26%20Frame%20Bags

Kinda doubtful about that bag though, as it looks as if its held onto the frame by just Velco straps, which will wear out over time.

Might end up just buying a saddle bag from Performance as there's one by my house so I dont have to pay shipping on a 5$ bag from Nashbar.

EDIT: Nice avatar Fugazi. Good series that.

FWIW you can get lumbar bags that are pretty tiny.

bento box?

yes but it can't be pinku (thats japanese for pink) or any girl color. It has to be of 2 or more kotoba (thats japanese for 2 compartments) and has be be chibi (small) sized. And has to be really kawaii (cute). Also It has to be about 10-20 bux. And the seller has to post pics of it first (i wanted to make shure it was kawaii [cute]). And it would have been nice if it came with matching chopstick holder (WITH chopsticks). OH! and it CANNOT have had any cartoon pictures, or been made out of plastic. It has to be made of ceramic, or something like that. Also it would have be nice if it was made in japan. and not in china or corea (korea) or whatever. I have found a bento box similar to the one im describing in e-bay, but it was 1 kotoba, and i didnt want my gohan (rice) to touch my other things (it can get wet and i would not like that, plus 2 compartments looks more kawaii).

freight baggage makes a really good hip pouch. waterproof, main pocket with outer velcro pocket and ulock holster.

pricey, but worth it if you're planning to use it all weather and often. - the strap might be annoying if you're going to ride shirtless though.

As I understand it, saying "Bento Box" is redundant because bento means box already? Like saying ATM Machine. I don't speak Japanese, but I seem to remember someone told me this.

^^ yeah, obento > "bento box"

i learned relatively fluent japanese when i was 5 (i'm japanese & italian) and after a 14 years of never needing to speak or write it, i forgot the language in its entirety.

Alabama
As of February 2006, the state ranked fifth in the nation in firearm death rates according to the Violence Policy Center.

The state ranked as the 17th most dangerous state in 2006, according to state and city rankings publisher Morgan Quitno Press.

Is the 45th healthiest state in the union, according to a study by the United Health Foundation. The state's rank, based on obesity rates, high infant death rates, and a low high school graduation rate, was unchanged from a year ago. Alabama had the highest increase nationally in obesity rate in the past year, climbing to 30.5 percent of the population in 2007 from 28.9 percent in 2006. That makes us the second heaviest state in the nation.

Ranks 48th in percentage of households with a computer, 46th in percentage of households with internet access, and 39th in percentage of households with broadband access, according to the U.S. Census Bureau

Wear Some ****ing Pants

I would but im thinking with an eye toward summer too. Im not going to wear jeans or cargo shorts to go lift, may be comfortable to you but not to me.

I dont own any mesh/basketball shorts with pockets, and even if I did, all the stuff I mentioned I would be hard pressed to fit in the pockets of normal pants. Add to the fact that there is no reason to rent a locker at the gym when I need to supply my own lock and renting costs 20$ a semster, and why would I rent a locker to hold workout clothes I would need to bring home every week to wash? Not to mention I need to keep the workout clothes on for the ride back in the summer, otherwise my regular clothes get sweaty anyways.

and THAT'S why i dont wear some ****ing pants

I was looking for a TT bag a while ago and I found this:
http://detours.us/product_info.php?products_id=123
I like that it's a QR. Maybe it's not big enough for you though? I didn't buy it because I wanted to be able to use it on multiple bikes, so I just went with a Bento Box..
Also, check out their handle bar bags. They might be a little expensive, though. I have a Detours trunk bag and I can say that it's top quality, FWIW.

Bring over a girl or some cops and proudly show off your purse collection and tell them they are "trophies" from all your conquests. I swear it'll increase the chances of a sale.

EDIT: Bento Box's are an actual bike bag? I thought they were kidding lol. Sorry I am such a bike bag noob. I looked online and those bento boxes look pretty sweet....

Yeah, they're cool, and they're cheap. Stuff bounces out of them, though. Also, I stuck a couple of paper towels on the bottom of mine to pad it because otherwise my phone was bouncing on the TT.

I got mine here:

Type "bento" in the search box.
