General Cycling Discussion - Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Screensaver Images

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It occurred to me that some other folks might like to use the bicycle images from my screensaver, so I've prepared a collection of 127 images, all 1024 x 768 pixels, horizontal orientation that you're welcome to download to use as a screensaver or desktop wallpaper.

There's an index file with thumbnails at http://sheldonbrown.com/screensaver

The images are all located in the file http://sheldonbrown.com/bike-screensaver1024x768/images

This index page gives you a preview of what the images are, so you can pick and choose if you wish.
Most of the images are original photographs, of bikes or parts. Some are scans from old catalogues, and others are from various other sources. Most of the strange-looking bikes are my own creations.

You are welcome to use these images as screensavers or desktop backgrounds on your own computer, but all other rights are reserved.

Pity they weren't posted at a higher resolution! Many people are over 1024x768 now, and 1200x800 is getting to be low-end for laptops.

A hot source of screen saver eye candy is the disc of images at www.bgcycles.com/cycleshop.html Hi-Rez images of some of the finest bike frame and equipment shots I've seen.

Who is Ken Denny?
Ken is a bicycle collector/restorer of some note. He's got some amazing stuff. I had taken some photos of a couple of his bikes at the Larz Anderson bike show a few years back.

After I put up the screensaver images, I received a very rude and peremptory email from demanding that I "cease and desist" from offering the photos of his bikes.

Although he has no right to legally compel me to remove my own photos from my Website, I chose to go along, rather than to make an issue of it. However, I didn't want to go to the trouble of re-doing the various HTML links, so I just removed the images, not the pages.

Back in the day, English bikes often had oddball construction details, usually with rather questionable explanations of what might make them "better."

There's a theory that the real reason was to make the bikes distinctive looking. British racing was under a heavy cult of amateurism, to the point that racers' bikes weren't supposed to have the brand name prominently displayed. Oddball frame designs offered a way to show who was sponsoring a rider without violating the letter of the regulations.

Interesting. He displays his work publicly and intentionally at a bike show and then gets his panties in a wad when they end up on the internet.

I needed cheap and fast. You can coax a few more fps out of your system with a lower resolution.

very nice! thank you very much

fyi:

for Linux folks, here's an easy way to get the images with a single command line (unless you're using gFTP, iGloo, ncftp, or konqueror):

wget -r -l1 --no-parent -A.jpg http://sheldonbrown.com/bike-screensaver1024x768/images/

and for the slide show (if you have the ImageMagick suite installed) with a 3-second pause between images:

display -delay 3 *.jpg

:-)

(i'm uploading one or two for my desktop on my Nokia N800)

- umm... i'm sure the photography is excellent, but i got sort of a chuckle out of:

These are all signed, collectors quality CDs...

- so i guess if i signed all my CDs, they'd be 'collectors quality'???

:-)
