Classic & Vintage - Need Urgent Craigslist decision help--Peleton with incomplete superbe group?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I started posting this in another thread, but decided to post it under a more specific heading to get some quick help...
I was just leaving to pick up an 83 (didn't make it into the catalogs in 83) Schwinn Peleton with the original Suntour Superbe Pro component and (I thought) wheelset for $200. It was listed as a 53cm bike, and the 84 catalog only lists 52 and 54. Sale price was $200.
The guy called and said he just pulled the bike down from the rafters, hadn't looked at the bike in 25 years, and remembered he had swapped out the wheels. The rear is a campy and the front is a shimano. I was really looking forward to the Superbe hubs... The original rims were sew-ups...
He says it must have been a 54 cm, since 52 would be way too small for him. At 54 cm, it's going to be slightly small for me...my ideal bike would be 52 st x 56 tt. I can't find any record of what the top tube is. Does anyone have a 54 cm Paramount or Peleton from the same time period who can measure the top tube for me?
Is this still worth $200 with the mismatched wheels?

Yes. Is everything else Superbe? Yes. Yes. Yes.
Yup. Everything else is Superbe. He rode it a year before he got into racing and bought a (geos??) that he's going to keep for sentimental value.
He threw out all his sew-up tires and wheels when he moved here from California, and was just thinking today that that was pretty dumb!

In that case, no, don't buy it. Hey - just out of curiousity, what's the guy's number? I need to ask him something....... ;)
You're wasting time - go get it and report back with photos. But offer $150. :D

200 bucks for a superbe pro equipped bike is a good deal. A regular superbe brakeset with levers just sold for 99 bucks (with shipping included) on ebay.
I bought an '84 Trek 760 with superbe components (even though the manual it came with says that it was speced with superbe pro), for about 280. So 200 bucks is a great price for that!
Prices are pretty high around here near philly though.
I'm pretty sure that bike came with aero-compe brakes and aerox cranks, btw. it did have superbe hubs (I still have the wheels from mine in the wheel pile) and sewup araya aero rims. Came with vittoria cx and cg sewups. I wish I still had those. could be that complete superbe translates to drivetrain in the seller's mind?

So..... did'ja buy it?
Yeah!
I was just about to go take pics of it. It's still in my car. It's missing a tire, and I don't have one to replace it with... or I should say, I'm too lazy to take one off another bike. But, maybe I will to see how it fits on me. I'll post photos soon.
OK, here's photos. Sorry for the quality, but I was trying to take a better grade of photo (believe it or not!). He said that he believes it's an 84, once he started to think about it. It looks like it got a lot of use for only being used a year. The rear brake has almost no logo left on it.
There are a few scratch marks on the non-drive side where it looks like he took a spill. Otherwise I think it will turn out nice. It actually looks like a 56 cm bike, but I'm always unsure when I measure. Both top and seat tubes are about the same. I think it actually may fit me fine! It came in a 22" version, and I believe that's what this is. You measure the top tube from center to center also?

Not a bad haul for $200
Well, it's all good. I'm a lot happier now that I think the bike will fit me. I wasn't pleased about the hubs and the brakes not being superbe. But it will be a fun project.

Nice bike for only $200. Superbe was very good and solid stuff.
I've missed mine ever since I sold it. It is a good rider...
