Had a nice slow run today on Chicago's lakefront (~8 miles) while my wife rode her bike. Yesterday I did 3x10 min subthreshold intervals on the bike. They are working on the pool (UIC) till next week; that is what I really need to be working on.

so what are the rest of you guys/ladies doing? What progress are looking for? How are you getting there? How is it going so far?

edit: I found the "training status" thread in the road racing forum incredibly helpful when looking for different takes on workouts. I thought it may be useful here as there are many that are fairly new to triathlon to seasoned pros with serious training info to share.

btw: happy new year!

I'm planning on going for a 2km straight swim later this morning as well as a 10km run this afternoon/evening.

Base training. Slow and long stuff. A bit tedious at times but it seems to be working.

Traveled to AZ last week to preview the IMAZ course. Just under 15 weeks to go.

^^^How does it look? I met a guy that said he was doing that as his first IM...He didn't know how to change a flat, I hope he does alright!

I just started base last week...I am adding some longer intervals (+10min) & SST with my bike base, last year I just did LSD; I hope to see some real gains in my power this spring.

...won't be riding outside for a while yet.

I just got back from a nice 3 mile run for the first run in a long time... swim team has taken up most of my time. i have swam close to 32,000 yards this week. I'm in great shape for the swim but need to start getting base miles on the bike and run.

Seems like a pretty cool course. I wasn't sure about the 3 lap thing but the plus side is that I will get to see my wife multiple times during the race. The bike course has a gentle climb that lasts for a few miles and for the most part the roads are OK. The run course is mostly concrete which isn't ideal but it's also mostly flat.

Overall, not the best course but certainly not the worst. I'm looking forward to it.

mtcycle, I'm in the opposite side of the coin. pool is closed all week & I go back to work monday. crap.

I need to do LT test; I have not done one since last summer (bike) and I've never tested for my run.

Runners: what is a good LT test? I assume a ave HR for a fast 1600 or 1k time would work...right?

Funny you would ask.

I finished the season on a low note at a big race in the end of October. I started training again about 4 days later, pretty hard. 5 weeks later I hated triathlons.

I took a few weeks off and am loving life again.

I am probably doing Ironman Canada this year, I think I can hit my goal.

I haven't done a darn thing yet... I'm hoping to bike commute tomorrow (yes, i count it as training). :D

However i'm also planning on donating blood next week which usually keeps me from doing anything for at least a week or two. I used to donate 3-4 times a year until i started doing triathlons. Now i only do it once a year during the "offseason". (and seeing how i only weigh 130 lbs, losing 1 pint of blood really wears me out)

My last event was a short sprint distance reverse triathlon near the beginning of December. Next event is in April (though i may do another short reverse tri in late February to gauge how well i'm doing with training).

not too much time this week so I did some tabata intervals today...

holy crap they are hard. This was my first time and I wimped out after the third set...but I didn't push that third set all that hard because I was amazed how taxed I was in 2.5 min. When I was done I sat on the bike with my head down...I though I was going to puke.

This week I am totally pinched for time so what the hell. We'll see how well I do on my next 5 mi TT effort.

I am curious as to what you did during your tabata intervals.
Here is a link to a tabata workout I did with kettlebells. (Not me in the video) We did the workout after he posted his blog.

On the trainer I warmed up for 5 min then did the 20 on 10 off for six sets (should be 4). For the 20 sec I had the tension on the trainer (magnetic) turned up with a reasonable gear choice and spun the ******* out for the duration. This was followed by 10 sec of no pedaling. Repeat.

for my first min I hit a cadence of 155, the second was in the high 140s...by the third I was crashing so I only did 3 min total. (I was measuring my output by cadence at a specific tension/gear.)

This was my first time with them, and it hurt. We'll see how it goes. Because I am pinched for time most of the time "they" say it can be beneficial to aerobic and anaerobic systems. because I can't afford to do nothing, it is worth a shot...

Status update:

On thursday night I went swimming for the first time since the last triathlon in early December last year. I didn't lose as much swimming fitness that i thought i would have. :D I took it easy (25, 50, 75, 100, 150 yard then back down) and was able to maintain a "breathe every 5th stroke" rhythm for the entire time. In my best shape last year i could easily go for 1200-1300 yards while breathing every 3rd stroke.

I've run afew times last month but i'll have to work in a run at least once a week. I'm trying to build that up as slowly/gradually as possible so i don't hurt my knees.

I should be ready in April to beat my time from last year. :D

[as for cycling fitness, i'm doing just fine on that]

35 miles of running this week, with a 20 minute AT @ 5:40 pace
4 hours biking

Not terrible considering the 5 degree weather right now.

In the midst of 18 week training program. Week 10 but I am going to Cozumel tomorrow for a week at an all inclusive resort for some respite. Scuba counts as swim training, right? Not so sure about tequila as a post workout recovery drink either.:D

rest day today. my week totals look like.

4 hours bike

2 hours swim

5 hours run

I need to get outside off the dreadmill and trainer! its killing me. especially because I got outside once this week when it was 58 degrees. I tasted the freedom of outside riding!

I'm finally running again. I was off it for more than a month. I'll be pretty strong on the bike this year becaue I am also racing, but I really need to get into the pool.

Question: Anyone know any arm/shoulder exercises that will "help" swimming? I know swimming is the best way to do this, but it is just difficult for me to get to a pool these days and am looking for anything to help. (I've been doing some core shoulder work, but am looking for anything in addition to that.)

Thanks!
