Mountain Biking - Gary Fisher Tassajara or Giant Iguana or anything?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm looking into buying a nice hardtail. So far I like the Gary Fisher Tassajara (I found the '03 for $550 at a nearby shop), and it has nice components and fork. The Giant Iguana is said to be heavy and the components aren't as good as the Tassajara.
Any other suggestions for bikes in this price range.
Thanks.

Marin has some good hardtails in that range. i have an 02 Palisades trail that has suited me well in Austin, crested butte, Fruta and Moab. you don't have to have an Elsworth to ride those places.
good luck,
