A couple weeks ago I found an old gitane roadbike when i was helping a friend clean out his garage. He didn't know what to do with it so i offered to take it. The paint was worn and chipped and the tires were cracked, and so i thought it would be a good idea to fix it up with nicer components (seat, seatpost, BB, crank, new tires, new paint) and then convert it to a single speed.

I brought it home, took some measurement and found that the parts needed (diameters mainly) are smaller than anything i can find online. The opening for the BB was about 34 mm and the seapost is about 25 mm. Im more of a mountain biker so im not sure if these measurement are normal for a road bike. It may just be that standards have changed over the years.

Would this be a good bike to convert?
Any suggestion where to find components?

If any part of that bike is french, might as well chuck it into a lake.

If nothing else, do your best. You can always just use the parts on it and build a DIY around town bike. Paint it, just mess around with it, see what you can figure out.

Go to Sheldon Brown's site on French bicycles. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/velos.html
Not worth the hassle, get a nice Japanese frame from the eighties (or better the seventies) in stead.

Take it to a shop if you can. They'll be able to measure everything and tell you what you need. Probably do it for free if you buy a seatpost or something from them.

And you can find 25mm seatposts, but they'll probably be steel.
