Southern California - Solvang Century - March 2008

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am still in for the century! Checking in the night before....I was able to get a room @ the Best Western Pea Soup Anderson's in Buellton....
I hope to be on the road Saturday by 7am.....
Not sure who I am riding with yet.....I have some friends coming up from CVC, but they are not starting
till 8 am...kinda late for me to start a century...
Well, there was one Accelerade person and one Cytomax person, so I guess I was inevitable. I use a 50/50 mixture of the two.
On another subject, I plotted out the Solvang route in Google maps with the terrain feature turned on. Came out good. Here's the link to get you to the map I plotted. You can zoom in on any part of the map. Route here is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate.

Karen,
Keep your eyes open for LA Baby(John), Jane(another SCV friend), and myself. We will be out there, we do our own little variation of the ride. Instead of doing Vandenberg after Lompoc, we go straight up and over Harris grade.
We will keep our eye open for the lady in pink.

Heads up to anyone going to Solvang this weekend; or to the Planet Ultra double at the end of the month:
The Buellton and Solvang police LOVE to give tickets to riders driving up Saturday morning... speeding into town to get to the event. So DON'T SPEED on Hwy 246 off the 101. Particularly for the Solvang Century. The town doesn't really like this event; as participants have caused problems in town not only with how they drive; but how they ride.
Have fun and be safe!

So, is there any notion to start as a group, or meet somewhere before, as in Palm Springs? If I don't see you guys at the start, and watch you disappear over the first hill as I plod along, I won't see you at all!

I did my last training ride for the 50 miler last night on my Fixie with the Brooks Leather saddle.
Either I'm finally breaking that saddle in, or my bottom is numb from the miles I've been putting in.
Need to give the Road Bike a good once over tonight and take it for a short spin.

Hi Magda003,
Jackie and I are heading out mid-morning for Solvang, so maybe be there a few hours before you. We don't have any definite plans for Fri. pre-Century dinner at this time, so I'll call you (I have your cell #) late Fri. afternoon and see what we can plan / decide upon.
We have had dinner at Pea Soup Anderson's (in Buellton), also there's a Pizza place we like in Buellton, but we're open to whatever you all decide too.

Super cool. Yes, last year we all went to Pea Anderson's Soup with Kim and Mike and a few other OCRebels. It was very good and reminded me of home cooking:D Let's touch base on Friday.
Well my friend Jackie text messaged me this morning, saying she is starting to feel a lot better, and is re-thinking doing the century now! But we probably won't make a decision until the drive up. I'll probably be wearing my Tri Club San Diego jersey, but if I have a windbreaker over the top, look for a tall guy on a black Cervelo being followed closely by a little asian gal on a 650C Trek...
I'd like to place an order for an additional 5-10 degrees please
Nah...perfect rding weather...besides...this should be warm for you now!!!
Everyone is more than welcome to join our group on the 50....
roll time will be between 8:30-8:45
Hey Herb. I've been sick for the last two weeks, so my assault on the 100 will have to wait another year. My wife and I are planning to do the 50, and are staying in Lompoc Friday night. Where can we meet you? We'll both be wearing Colavita kit (check about halfway down the main Solvang Century homepage for a pic of my group from last year's ride): http://www.bikescor.com/solvang/welcome.htm

OK, I had to check Wikipedia to find out what rubber mallet might mean;) because I have never heard this term.........and here is the description just in case anybody else might be wondering:
Tool mallets are hammers with heads made of softer materials than the steel normally used in hammerheads, so as to avoid damaging a delicate surface. Some common types of mallets are:
Rubber mallets are used when a softer blow is called for than that delivered by a metal hammer. They are typically used to form sheet metal, since they don't leave marks, as well as for forcing tight-fitting parts together, for shifting plasterboard into place, in upholstery, and a variety of other general purposes, including some toys. It is the most commonly used mallet. The Three Stooges often used rubber mallets to konk each other on the head.
I see, "rubber mallets are used when a softer blow is called for".

Mark, got your PM, thanks. Hope I don't oversleep.:D
101 Traffic Alert
Traffic is down to one lane thru the Gaviota Tunnel heading to Solvang (northbound)
due to construction
This might get bogged down at certain times...
It is short...right after the turn , it starts by the rest stop (closed btw) and goes thru the tunnel then ends, but I can see lots of slowdowns thru there
An alternate would be to exit at State St and take 154 over to Solvang
