Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. OK, I have decided to get a single speed for no good reason. I just think it would be cool to use around town and chase after the kids, etc. Is there really anything different about all the sub 1K bikes out there? The sputnik? the capo? the langster? Or maybe the San Jose or Paddy Wagon might be better for an all-around ride? Someone just pick one for me so I can be done with it and just start riding!

i would say there is little difference in the quality, only in the features. i.e. some have fenders, some have cross tires and canti brakes, some have brakes period, etc. just pick the one that meets your needs.

If by "in a crash" you mean "hideous".

It depends on your needs and wants. The bikes you mentioned are all nice and fine vehicles im sure.

I love my Sputnik, I ride it fixed. I dont know if I would ride it single speed, because if I rode SS I would want a rear brake and the Sputnik has no cable guides (though it is drilled for one). Its still a great bike though.

Personally I dont care for the Capo or Langster.

I would look into the San Jose for a good SS.

What is the point of the curving downtube on that Van Dessel?

Um, doesn't sound like he is too inclined to build up a bike.

Yeah I know, just thought that building his own bike would help light a fire under his ass ;) but sound's to me like he'll ride it for a bit then sell it to one of us for way less....... FORGET MY ADVICE!!! Buy the most expensive bike in 55cm!!!

[QUOTE=ralphm2k;5903313]Ok. That's creepy.

OK, let me elaborate. Chasing MY kids around....no creepiness there. I meat to say I don't want to have to dress up in all my "superhero" gear and clip-in with my shoes to ride the "real" bike I have. I also feel a little goofy riding a top-notch (okay...a decent trek) bike through the park for a five ten minute spin. That's why I wanted a cheap basic bike to hop on and hop off.

As far as the "build your own" thoughts...I do have an old Schwinn Criss-Cross hybrid from 1991 that I can't seem to part with. I have often wondered about switching it to a SS but I don't believe I am up to the technical modifications required. I also think that I'd end up spending more money on upgrades than buying the Sputnik.

BTW - The Country Road Bob does look goofy with the wavvy fork but I do believe there is a "normal" fork option. I do like the Kona though......hmmmm...I am right back where I started....damn!!

My bad.....I meant the CRB has the option of the straight downtube..not fork. That's what happens when your kid starts to talk to you while you are sneaking onto bike forums when the Mrs. isn't around!!

Can you not simply sell the kids to fund a custom build, that is what I did, although I do miss them from time to time I soon forget.
