Texas - Hotter'N Hell Hundred 2008

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I know it's early yet, but the 2008 HHH registration is open and I'm already registered(I like to have a 3 digit number:D)....this is a great ride that is VERY well organized and they really make the riders feel welcomed...it is very well staffed and they have great rest stops....I recommend it to anyone interested in trying a century or any of the shorter rides as well!!!.... they had over 11,000 riders register last year
Your link does not appear to have made it. Maybe this is what you were talking about?

"I recommend it to anyone interested in trying a century"
I've never ridden this, but it sounds like fun and I plan to go. I'd never make a 100 miles, but they do have several shorter routes- it's not a 100 miles or bust.
thanks for adding the link!!!....slight brain f@rt there!!!:)
This will be the first year I plan to do the full 100mi. The last two years I did the Metric. It is a fantastic ride, one thing brings riders from all over the country. Last year I rode with BF'ers from Colorado, a Texan back in town from his current home in New Hampshire, etc.
Last year was my first year for this ride also and I just signed to go back. It's a great ride with greatest support around. I'm already craving the home made cookies in Electra!!!

Hmm...I promised myself I'd ride a century in '08. Don't know if it'll be the HHH, but who knows?

+1 - that and we're planning to head up on Friday to watch the races and check out the vendors. The past year, we woke up at 2:30 and drove up from Dallas and did the metric and then drove home (rough day).

Better book lodging early. With 10,000 plus folks hitting town things fill up fast.
I would highly recommend riding the 100 mile course for a first century. Last year, my first century ride (ever) was in the HTH and it was a blast. It’s a flat and fast course with plenty of support. If I remember correctly, 75% of the riders at HTH were scheduled to ride the century course.

True - and watch out for the hotels trying to hit you for mandatory two and even three (I've heard, but have a hard time believing that) nights stay for that weekend, even if you only want the Friday evening stay.
Ultimately, we'll probably stay with people in our club, or I'll see if my super-duper-elite-platinum-stayed-too-many-darn-nights-in-hotels status with Marriott has any pull to get me a one-night stay.

This will be my 18th. All but 2 years I've done the 100.
you definately want to go up on Fri. if possible...the vendor show is great...the spaghetti dinner is nice, grab a couple of cold beers and then head out to watch the Crits!!

True - but then I did say I got up at 2:30, not that I was still up and ready to roll. The only other vehicles we saw past Denton heading towards the Falls all had bikes strapped to the roof/hitches, so we weren't the only crazy ones on the road that morning.
and it's not like I wasn't sleeping in for the 10:00am or later rides over the holidays....

Hmmm. I may have to reconsider. Start at 7:00 AM, have 5.5 hours to go 60.3 miles if they don't close it earlier. That works out to 11 mph, think I could make that with no problem. Except I hear that if you start way back, it can be an hour before you even start moving, which puts it at 13.4 mph + breaks. That might be a bit rougher for me, and would depend on wind or lack thereof. With no wind and minimal hills, think I could do it.
Nancy and I are signed up. I signed for 100 miler and signed her up for 100k (she doesn't know it yet)
not sure what we will ride (metric or imperial) probably decide day of the ride.
Did anyone sign up for the medical study?
Marty
The start was staged much better these past couple of years. I was rolling within 15 minutes of the cannon blast. Last year's weather wasn't bad at all for a Century, but the year previous I was barely suviving the 100k. The distance I'll be going will depend on my conditioning at the time.

It's a blast. This will be my third year doing the century, and I hope to break the 4:30 barrier this time. Missed by 15 minutes last year.

Got my room right after the 07 ride and I'm going to sign up today! HHH is a WONDERFUL event. The people, the riders, the town. This will be my second year riding and I plan on riding this ride until I leave this earth. This should be on everyone's must ride and go for the 100 miler!!

I stayed for free a a church just 2 miles form the start, so I had 106 miles last year, but 0 cash layout for lodging. They even threw in a free shower!
I live in Dallas, so I have to travel right up the road this year for the HHH and my first century!

Yahoo maps shows 303 miles from Austin to Wichita Falls, although that may not be the most direct route.

My buddy and I drove it in 2006. It's an easy drive. I-35 to Ft. Worth (about 3 hours) then 287 to W.F. (about another 1.5 hours).
A couple of us drove from Georgetown to Wichita Falls last year using the 183/281 route. It’s about the same travel time and distance, but we preferred to stay off of I35.

Cuda, I literally started on the very front row right under the arch. And I was still dodging a whole herd of folks on bikes for miles. I was passing people all the way to the end of the 100 mile (actually 103 miles) ride. So, I'm guessing a lot of people must start the ride somewhere down the route after the racers go by.
I won't know my schedule for August until late July but the plan is to actually jump in and race the 100K. So, my plan is to also get a GPS locator so the paramedics can find the remains of my carcass on the side of the road.

Yup I started in the front row of recumbents and cruised along at well more than 25mph for the first hour or so, and I passed probably 500 cyclists during that time, without being passed by anyone, so there are definately a lot of starters down the line!
I'm one of the down the line starters....we stay at the La Quinta and it's about 1.5mls from the start....we just get up, head down the street(with all the other La Quinta folks)wait for the racers to come by, then the recumbents and tandems...and when it looks good we start....there are a lot of folks starting from a lot of points in the first 5 miles or so...and a lot of folks start way before the official start.

If I end up staying in TX for grad school I'll try and be there. I really wanted to go last year, but it goes on the first weekend of school. I couldnt afford the gas with having to buy books and all.

I would recommend not registering until you get there. The line for preregistered is a mile long while you walk up to the register line.

300 miles, give or take. Wait a minute, yep, 304.15 miles according to Yahoo maps.
This will be my first time - I'm going to get up early Saturday morning and leave Flower Mound at 4. Should be just under a 2 hr. drive for me. I have no idea where to park or what to expect other than a lot of cars, bikes, and people. I hope to get there in time to get parked and drink some fluids, stretch and relax for 15 minutes before the gun sounds. I intend to do the 100, anyone have any advice on what street to look for for parking? I have no idea what I'm doing!

Haven't been there yet, but looking around on the website at http://www.hh100.org/
I find this quote:
"We hope that you observed the value of the following:
"The fast lines in pre-registration. There were no back ups like last year.
"The phased start cleared the start line in 20 min.; last year was almost an hour."
So whoever mentioned the lines- are you sure that wasn't TWO years ago?
On this page, I find a link to maps:
