Southern California - Hurt myself and not riding this week

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Uggg... this is depressing!

Over the past 5 or 6 months, I've had some issues on the bike. Some hip pain (which may very well be IT Band related) and shoulder discomfort. None of this ever appears during rides only afterwards. And not on all rides. Started doing exercises to rehab my left shoulder (right has been fine.)

I did a bike fit at Sundance with limited success and a week or two later, switched out my bars for flat wing plus replaced my adjustable stem with a new FSA 120mm. Feels nice and thought I've been doing okay now.

Two days ago, I got on our trainer to do a 50 minute workout. The bike is my old 10 speed Peugeot. Compared to my Giant OCR, it feels small. I could never ride it outdoors. Since Vicki and I share it for workouts, all I do is raise or lower the saddle. We've been using it this way for several years.

I knocked off the workout, only noticing that I felt a bit off-balance and leaning forward a bit too much. Made a mental note to make sure the bike is level and the saddle more upright. But nothing so terrible I couldn't finish easily.

That night, my hip was a mess. Sore, uncomfortable. Same with my right shoulder. Ibuprofin took care of the hip pretty quickly but the shoulder was nasty last night, a day later. Had to get up during the night to ice it. I think it's starting to feel a touch better today and I'm hoping that I'll be back to mostly comfortable again by the weekend.

Now what? Once the pain is gone (boy, it better go away!) I'm afraid to use the trainer and wary of ever getting on my Giant. Remember I never feel these things when I'm on there so I have no way to even gauge what is going on. I've used that trainer a hundred times with no problem and my OCR for 4 years.

Naturally, as I laid awake in the middle of the night, I had all of these thoughts that I'd never get back on the bike again, that I messed myself up badly, that I'll get old and fat..etc...

I'm thinking of giving this a week or so to heal and then making an appointment with Dr. Rich in Thousand Oaks. He does fit plus sports injury work. Maybe he has got an answer that will at least get me back on the road. Hope so....this sucks.

I know mentally that this will likely pass and I'll probably be back riding, swimming, etc. again in a few weeks...but it nags at me that I might not. Okay, I'm a complainer sometimes! Wahhhhhh

Happy New Year!

Sheldon

Sorry to hear that. If there's one thing I learned with my knee problem last year, it's that you have to let yourself heal. I believe you did one of the rides with me when I had yet to learn that lesson. Get well and start the year off right.

Sorry, Sheldon. I hope you feel better soon and get it all sorted out so you get back to riding!

Nesdog, I'm sorry to hear about your pain. Have you considered trying pilates for your therapy? I've suffered from knee and back pain and many suggested pilates. I started over the xmas break. Maybe you can talk to a studio and instructor near you. A large number of people go to pilates because of recurring injuries.

Good luck with healing.

Sorry to hear this Sheldon...
Very wierd that you have used the trainer before...maybe you just pulled or threw something out of whack....
Maybe a chiropractor can help...usually works really well for me...
Hope you get better soon!

Ha! Ha! Ha! I said that to Vicki this morning. I'm getting old and might have to see if I can buy an extended warranty for myself.

Thanks. The ibuprofin is helping today. Most likely, this experience on the trainer is a one-off but it sure is worrisome. What I'm thinking of doing is just dragging my bike upstairs and using it instead of the Peuguot. Too bad, I'd rather have just the one all purpose bike in there. Plus will have to get a new computer with cadence for the Giant.

I can totally relate. I'm nursing a hamstring injury right now and it's driving me crazy being off the bike for only about ten days. Today I took my first little spin around the neighborhood just to see if I had any more intense pain. I think the answer lies in taking a reasonable amount of time off the bike, and doing some stretching and rehabilitation to prepare your body for getting back to it. Good luck.

I have also found Aleve to help quite a bit as well!

That might be worth a try...a Cateye Astrale is about $29 on sale...
My trainer bike is a slight bit smaller...and has shorter cranks...could just be your body trying to adjust??

BTW..if you find that warranty upgrade..let me know!;)

Sheldon, easy fix as for the bike. Use your Giant for your fixed trainer bike and get a new roadie for the road !!! Win-Win situation!

Sure....come over and explain that to Vicki!

Actually I've been keeping my eye out for a cheap bike we can share on the trainer, more up to date and better fitting than my old 10 speed. haven't seen anything on craigs list or garage sale yet...can't spend very much on it.

That 10 speed is a bike I rode for over 30 years and have used for 3 years on the trainer without issues. Although I never really put it in the miles with it that I do with the Giant.

Definately not working for me this week.

Wow...that has to be a fluke then...
I know sometimes my hip goes out...only thing that fixes that is a trip or 2 to the chiropractor...

Another better fitting bike might help...but I like Adams idea of a new roadie...although, I tried that and it didnt work:rolleyes:
So I am using this old Giant Cadex 380 on my trainer...I only paid $50 for it and it had a Brooks on it...that was worth the $50 itself...and has made me a brooks convert...
I put my old 9 speed wheels on it and away I go...

Well I hope you get this figured out...
I have also taken to using ice at time...seems counter productive to me...but it does work on the back and knees....then I will reverse and use Tiger Balm for some heat (especially on back and shoulders)....that combo can work at time as well!

The whole ice versus heat thing is confusing, and there are such conflicting opinions on the topic. For my latest hamstring injury, I've decided to completely eliminate heat, and go exclusively with ice 3-5 times a day.

Generally, I use ice for the first 48 hours and then switch. So since I got injuried on Sunday, I'm about to switch over to heat.

I used to get a lot more hammie issues when I was running. Since I started biking, I make sure to do some hamstring work in the gym once a week. It seems to really help. The problem is that our quads are much stronger than the hams so you get an inbalance...causes knee pain and other stuff.

oh I totally agree...
I do see ice work better for a lot of things...even when I think heat would be better!

Not really. Quite simply ice is better for all injuries, heat only for sore or tight muscles but it must be moist heat. Heat pads that are dry are no good.

Nesdog, I had the same symptoms with the hip. Turned out to be a slipped disc in my back. Once I found a "decent" chiropractor I was back to feeling good in no time. Now I visit the gym a couple times a week to try and keep all the supporting muscles strong. Not only do I feel better but Im doing much better on the bike too.

I'm looking for a good chiro. Who do you go to?

I hope that you are feeling better soon, Nesdog. I hate injuries and these sorts of problems...:(

Yeah, getting there slowly. So far only 1 dose of ibuprofin today, though I may take another before bed.

I checked over the measurements on my trainer bike against my roadie. Hmmm. Reach from saddle to hoods is 28 inches on the Giant but only 25 on the trainer. KOPS way forward on the trainer also. Everything points to too small on the 10 speed. (I really mean 10 speed total!).

Unreal that a 50 minute Spinerval session turns out to be such a pain. Good thing it's winter! Too bad I'll probably skip next Saturday's SM ride. Oh well..

Seriously I'm dying to find a good chiropractor. The last one I went to didn't help very much, although I have had great results with others in the past...
