I'm currently training to do a tri, but haven't yet done one. I have a question about leaving your bike at the transition station: does anyone watch it for you? Are you supposed to lock it? Maybe I'm a little paranoid because I just bought my first expensive bike (had 2 cheapies stolen in college), but I'd love to hear how they prevent theft. I mean seriously, you leave thousands of dollars worth of gear there, does it ever get stolen?
at my tri, there was someone checking to make sure the race number you were marked with matched up to the race number on the bike. you weren't allowed out of the T area unless the numbers matched.
not a perfect solution, but enough to deter the average thief.
Most races now you have to have a wrist band to enter the transition area. And only athletes get wrist bands. And, as mentioned, your bike number has to match you body markings.
