The Historian and I will be riding our birthdays this weekend. I'd greatly appreciate some feedback on this route!

Thanks and have a great 2008.
Edit: Did a new version of the route.

Hey Neilfein - it looks as good as any to get there, but why??? Traffic and roads are terrible. Unless you've really got a need to ride to Montclair, why don't you cut across the Raritan on Landing Lane from River Rd. and head West? Head down Weston Canal Rd. to Princeton or something if you want a destination.
I used to live in Edison, and have driven all over the area of your ride, and would never want to ride there myself. You'll be going right past where one of my kids live in Dunellen. Have you ever ridden those streets?
Whatever you do, be safe!

Because The Historian has been to Princeton but not to Montclair. I've never ridden in Dunellen.
Any streets you can think of that would be better? It's a windy route because I'd like to keep it to 42 miles, but where it winds is open for debate.

The Historian likes Princeton. He spent a weekend researching at the University Library a few years ago. No reason not to go back.

It's nice, and we can edo that if there turns out not to be a good way to Montclair. But I think you'd like it there.
I rerouted to avoid Dunellen: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Edison-to-Montclair-v-2

I agree with Terex: Essex Co. (where I live) is not a great place to ride. While the middle part of that ride (between Rt. 22 and maybe Livingston) won't be bad, I don't like either end. When I ride, I prefer to go west rather than north towards Montclair. And there are a few places along that route where you could make the ride much more pleasant (e.g. avoid going on S. Orange Ave. in Livingston by taking Parsonage Hill Rd. to White Oak Ridge).

Thanks, jemoryl, I put that in.
I rerouted to go through several more parks as well.
