ALL,
I got a Fuji fixie as a Christmas present :)
I've only riden it a couple times, and I am getting use to peddling ALL the time, except going over really rough pavement. On my road bike, I'd just put the peddles at 3 & 9 and coast a little over the really rough places. What the best way to go through really rough pavement on my fixie?

Thanks..

Lift your butt off the saddle half an inch.

You'll get it...

Yeah, get off the saddle. Stay loose.

Eventually you'll be able to ghost pedal and balance on the pedals while keeping them moving. It won't happen immeadietly.

slight backpedal over bumps= "ghost pedaling"?

Also the word peddle irks me.

He means pedaling without forward/backward force, like if you're bombing a hill.

Oh, is that also called soft pedaling?

lift your ass off the seat a little, lighten the weight on the bars, try to get a bit behind your saddle, a la mountain biking. that's how i do it, and it works fairly well. also, learn to lift your bars a little over the bump, then lift your weight off your rear wheel as your back wheel goes over the bump. basically easing the pressure on each wheel as it hits the bump.

i've been thinking about bumps a whole lot. i've been riding my fairly-new-to-me road bike much of the past month, but my track bike the past few days.

i think, when i'm riding a fix, i take surface unevennesses a lot more tactfully, because i'm using my whole body to absorb the shudder, rather than just letting the bike jar itself and transmit the shaking into my body, as I think I do when I'm roadbikin'.

So, yeah, on a fix, you can lift your bum off the saddle - in order to support your body and keep pedaling, you've got to be a bit more coordinated, work with the bike and the surface.

Ride the freewheel side for a bit (if it has one) and power over bumps to get the feel of it.

On my normal route there are several speed bumps I cant avoid. Ive learned to pull my butt out of the seat at about the last second and then let the saddle come up and meet back up at the top, then I just ride the rest out.

If im on a rough street to the point your vision gets really shaky slow down a bit if you can and move your weight off the saddle a bit more to use your arms and legs to absorb more shock.

Overall just keep riding. Youll get used to it and will figure it out as you go.

Lift the front up and suck up the back wheel as you roll over, like a bunnyhop without jumping.

It depends on the size of the bump, if its small and sharp i slow down. If its smooth i ride over like with any of my bikes. just use your legs (bent)...

I can't bunny hop or skid/bar-spin over them, if you can you should, while pulling a wheelie.

All,
Thanks... I'll let you know how the next ride goes...
I have to travel with work ALL day Friday = no ride; but weather supposed to be even better this weekend :-)

not if you press "A" "BB" "A" at the start of your ride and get unlimited sick skidzzzzzzzzz and 99 lives -- then the button is right there all the time

i'm still trying to find the "instant no-hands wheelie" code... anyone?

i just hover out of my seat a little (an inch or so) and loosely grip the bars while pedaling softly. the bike will bounce around over the cobble or bumps or whatever you have to deal with while your body stays relatively comfortable and suspended. - either that or hit the sidewalk for a bit.

in all seriousness, i try to wheelie through bumpy spots

Like others have said just work on pedaling while hovering above the saddle a little. You don't have to wait until it gets bumpy to practice this.
