I'm just getting into mountain biking and am going to swing by my LBS to try some out. I'm planning on trying the GF Cobia. What else would be good to try?

In order of importance I'm looking for a bike that is:

1. Good on trails (this is where I'll use and enjoy it the most)
2. Good at climbing/descending (there are a lot hills in my area)
3. Decent on the road (I'll use it some on the roads and occasionally to commute to work)

I just bought a trek 3900, seems great.
Also, for a good starter bike I've ehard the trek 4300 is great! (havnt riden it though)

All the major manufacturers have their own bikes in that price range. Check out Specialized, Kona, Marin, Iron Horse, etc.
