Northeast - Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Seek Mapping Help!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Greetings,

I’m the director of technology for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and we’re conducting a GPS mapping project that could really use your help. We’re mapping all the country’s rail-trails for the first time ever. This data will be freely available to the public on our website TrailLink.com. The help we need from you is easy – all you need is your GPS receiver. We collecting GPS tracklog and specific waypoints for each rail-trail. Please visit http://www.traillink.com/gps.aspx for more detailed information or feel free to email me directly at frederick@railstotrails.org.

Thank you for your help!

Frederick

This is an excellent organization; has anyone else been able to contribute? I emailed Frederick several tracks earlier this year.

Define cheap. The Garmin etrex legend can be found for under $100, but by the time you add a handlebar mount and detailed street maps you're over $200. If you're cell phone has gps you might be able to use it.

I could've helped these guys yesterday if I had 1) known about them and 2) had a gps. Rode from Brewster to back to the Bronx along the rail trail. Nice ride and a great way to see the changing of the colors.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the excellent feedback about our mapping initiative. We've really made tremendous progress during the last 3 years and now have over 12,000 miles of rail-trails mapped thanks to the help of people like Steve and other great volunteers! :thumb:

We are now publishing all of this great new GIS data using the customized Google Maps API on our trail-finder website, TrailLink.com (http://www.traillink.com), and I invite you to check it out and would appreciate any feedback on the site's new functionality.

Regarding the lack of GPS unit, we recently launched a new interactive mapping tool (http://www.traillink.com/gps.aspx) on TrailLink.com that utilizes the high-resolution imagery in Google Maps and makes it easy to map a trail from the comfort of your computer chair! Please check out the new tool as well and let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Frederick
