Bicycle Mechanics - hub bearing cup replacement, campy

how exactly does this (http://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi?d=single&c=Tools&sc=Axle%20Sealed%20Bearing&tc=&item_id=LS-0098LT&id=985312925471) tool work.
looks like it slides through the hub and then catches the hub cup with those tangs. then what? hammer on the back side of the tool or something?

where can i get the replacement cups?
is it usually the cup, the bearings, or the cones that need to be replaced to make a bumpy hub smooth again? i never see bad stuff on the cups and cones but there is always some bumpiness going on...i guess that leaves bearings huh?

And when I've seen replacement cups they were too much $ when compared to just buying another old hub, so I don't have a good source.

It looks like you close the tool, insert from the side you are removing, let it open, then you ram it with a hammer and a pointed axle inserted though the hub from the other side

I've used a valve lifter removal tool from my car days in a similar fashion

hmm, i just thought of another question.
i wonder if what they are referring to is what i would call the dust cap...or atleast the tool could work for popping that out too i guess. that could make hub cleaning/rebuilding much easier.

The cups (or inner race) is replaceable, as it is with all Campagnolo hubs/wheels. Which hub do you have and what year is it? The parts will be available on-line from http://www.branfordbike.com/ (for example).

so that tool isn't for the inner bearing race?

i haven't checked the date code but i think they are probably something like late 70's super/nuovo record low flange.

I haven't seen hub cones for sale in a long time, but I've seen lots of used hub shells with cones on eBay.

Try replacing the bearing balls first. I never put old bearings back in. It doesn't make sense when you can buy 100 grade 25 balls for less than $5.

Check the cups and cones by running a ballpoint pen over them.

i'll do that.
i just ordered a ball bearing kit so next time i'm repacking all my hubs i'll just replace the bearings too...

Don't order a "bearing kit". Order a lifetime supply of grade 25 bearing balls for less than $5.
