Does anyone know if a Shimano model FC-4550S compact crank, 175mm; 110mm BCD is compatable with a Shimano 105 bottom bracket? I would think so but not totally sure.

Thank you!

I'd assume the only concern would be the BB spindle to crank interface. I am not familar with that crank or BB model, but the basic two Shimano interfaces would be square taper or Octalink. These two designs are quite noticeably different. So if the interfaces look the same, they are compatible.

I think you mean the 4550 Tiagra compact crank. I use it with the ultegra hollowtech II BB, it should work fine with 105 too. Nashbar had the ultegra BBs for less than 105 last time i checked.

You can use any of the external cups in the shimano line.

Shimano should take a hint from Campy and only offer one BB to cut down on confusion and the number of SKUs. In turn, it should lower prices

The reason Campy has one model external bottom bracket is that they are only empty shells. The bearings come with the cranks and the models and prices vary widely for these.
