View Full Version : Hey Eugene - why no MTB trails?

It's a little soggy now, but I'm starting to get excited about getting my mountain bike out soon. I've lived in Eugene for a few years now, and am disappointed with the lack of MTB trails within a riding range. I don't want to drive to Oakridge or down south to find cool trails... why don't we have anything other than the super-short Ridgeline section in town???

Here are the two areas I am excited about exploring this spring:

West 52nd Ave - roughly lines up with the existing MTB track, turns into a utility cut w/ double track and lots of side trails that look promising. Does anyone ride here???

Coburg Hills - BLM land (publicly accessible). I've never been there, but have co-workers who quad there. Have ridden my road bike up to Mohawk, which should be near the closest access point. Possible downsides = hunters, motorized vehicles, and logging. Does anyone ride here???

I want to know if anyone else is interested in finding/developing MTB riding areas within a ridable radius of Eugene.

Areas around town are mostly private land, so options are limited. It would be nice to ride right out of the garage, but you can't, so. There are some trails up on Shotgun Creek in Marcola, real nice trails just out of Lorane, then the National Forest to the east. It's what we have, and it's incredible riding, well worth the drive.

I understand the private land issue - it's been in the paper the last few days regarding the city's efforts to develop the Ridgeline area.

Since posting, I found the Lane County Oregon Mountain Bike Ride Guide (http://outdoorprogram.uoregon.edu/mbrg/), by the UO Outdoor Program!! Only problem - it looks like it hasn't been updated recently. Shotgun is included, as is the area I call West 52nd Ave (called Skinner's Classic in the Ride Guide).

Skinners Classic is listed as private land in the guide - does anyone know if the owners are still OK with visitors on bikes?? Would I be riding into someone's conflict zone?
