A friend of mine has given me a lightly used set of Sugino 75 cranks as a gift (165mm) The suggested bottom bracket length is listed at 109-110mm Square Taper.

My ride fits a 68mm BB shell with 1.370 X 24tpi ENGLISH threading.

I used this bike for heavy urban street riding and really want a BB with sealed bearings. The Sugino 75 and Sugino 75 Superlap BB’s are both 68 X 109mm with loose bearings.

I see that Shimano makes a BB called the BB-UN54 or just UN54 that Square Taper with English threading and they offer it in a 110.5mm length. It is a sealed cartridge BB. Some online retailers list it as a 110mm and not a 110.5mm length.

I can’t find this BB on Shimano’s website at all. The only Square taper one I can find is the BB-UN25 (which they list no specs for) I have searched their site for the UN54 every way I know how but still can't find it........!

Anyway, I am running a 42mm chain line from off my rear hub. Since most people are probably running the Sugino 75 cranks with the Sugino 75, 109mm BB, does anyone think I am going to have a major chain line issue if I run the 110.5mm Shimano BB-UN54 vs the 109mm Sugino?

It looks like 109-110 is what everyone suggests for these cranks.

It is only a difference of 1.5mm………

Anyone running this Shimano BB with the 75’s?

Any other Sealed Bearing BB suggestions for the Sugino 75 cranks?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions!

those are loose ball....meh. if you live someplace where there's never bad weather, cool, otherwise you'll be cleaning it every day.

i have a campy centaur now, two ohio winters are putting it out of commission. i was told it was supposed to last for a year and i got it from someone who had ridden it for a couple years, and it ended up with three years on it running perfectly (all three ridden by full time messengers in oregon) and half an ohio winter was all it took to put it on its death bed. by now it creak and groans and moans and begs me to put it out of its mercy, but i'm not getting something new in mid-winter just to have it ruined in half a week by all the salty slush.

it may make it through this one, but when it's done, it'll be time for me to go to a new bb. the best deal i've found and best fit for a 75 crank is the miche primato 110mm. choose your threading and shell size.

I already settled that. Search my threads. Mr. Sugino says it's ISO. Campy Centaur is one appropriate solution, and one of the cheapest. Miche too I believe.

Shimano is JIS. Mix it all you want but you're deforming the taper.

I like the feel of the S75 BB the best though, loose ball is butter smooth and efficient. Never sees rainy day rides, though.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am riding in all kinds of foul weather, staying away for the Sugino BB, will look into the Miche Primato and Campy Centaur ISO BBs. Looks like the Shimano is JIS for sure.... thanks for the help

i'm sure dirt/grit still finds it's way even into sealed bearings too.

^^^

it does and because they're sealed you can't clean them out. I'd suggest just running the S75 BB and tear it apart regularly after riding in ****ty weather for a cleaning and regreasing.

on the sealed/loose issue: i'd get the 75 bb and a cheap sealed 110 ISO bb. run the cheap one all winter, then put the 75 or superlap in for nice weather. that way you can throw away the cheap one after winter and not worry about it.

+1

Added benefit of the Miche is that you have adjustment in the chainline. The driveside 'cup' doesn't have a lip to lock its setting against the bb tube face. You have a few mm either way of adjustment.

Shimano's UN-54 is an Ultegra/Deore LX level (just below Dura-Ace/XTR) BB. I think there is a 109mm spindle but hard to find to some degree. The UN-25 is a reasonable quality BB that would stand up to hard weather riding.

What issue? ;)
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbtaper.html

I used the Sugino-75 BB for about a year, it became pitted (just two rainy day rides, argggh), so I replaced it with a Shimano UN54 -107mm sealed BB. The chain line to my surprise is perfect and actually ~1mm better that with Sugino BB (with Surly hub)

Since the tapers are different the crank will sit differently so you can't use the same length spindle. With a J.I.S. spindle and ISO cranks you need to use a shorter spindle to match the chain line you would get with a ISO spindle.

The Shimano bottom brackets are the wrong taper! Sugino 75 is ISO!

Exactly. What? It was installed right, ran perfectly. Then after one week of rain it started to grind, opened it up and found the pitting.

prolly installed it wrong, did you have the BB chased and faced?

I took my S75 apart for a spring cleaning about a month ago. The last time I had it serviced was early november, and went through a few rainy days (maybe 15-20 all told, about 250 miles of wet riding) since then. When I took it apart, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the white lithium grease I had packed it in last time was still white, no dirt or grit in sight. I wouldn't worry too much about a S75 not holding up if you perform regular maintenance on it. And besides, bike maintenance makes you cool.

The taper (angle) is the same regardless of whether it is ISO or JIS. The difference is in how far down onto the spindle the crank sits. In days of old the issue was more a concern with JIS cranks on ISO spindles, you could eventually bottom out with repeated removal and installation. With todays sealed bearing units, it really isn't an issue.

As long as you've got sufficient engagement between spindle and crank, the only other concern is that you have the proper chainline. I've been using a JIS Phil Wood with my Sugino 75 on the fixed CC for 4 years now without issue.

Get a campy square taper. They are butter smooth and indestructable. I've got over 2500 miles on one, and 2000 miles on another, in nothing but terrible, slushy, salty weather. And they are both as smooth as day 1.

The veloce ones are only $30, too. A helluva deal. Loose ball stuff is stupid. No matter how much smoother they are (IMHO not true), I think you would prefer riding instead of overhauling your BB. Just personal preference though....

Cheers~

The Miche Primato mounts just like a Phil, so the chainline is adjustable. They may not last as long as a Phil, but they only cost twenty bucks.
