Framebuilders - Custom Steel Stem

I am considering a custom steel stoker stem for my tandem. Does anyone want to offer an estimate of the weight of a steel 180mm stem for 31.8mm bars and a 27.2 "steerer" (seatrpost) ? Also what type steel would you suggest?

My guess is 300 grams. 180mm is a long stem.

My quill steel 140mm Cinelli Pinocchio weighs around 250 g. I think that a stroker stem at 180 could weigh about the same.

180 mms stem??? 14 and 15 cms are super long stems, cant imagine a 18 cms stem wow.u have long arms eh? :P

The original post was for a custom TANDEM STOKER STEM - so 180mm is not that unusual (and conversely, the longer the stem, the shorter the arms).

That said, I am also interested in a custom stoker stem. Does anyone here do custom stems?

For that kind of thing the steel is going to be 4130, In theory one could externally butt it on a lathe, though whether it's worth the trouble would depend on the application.

The tube would weigh about 103 grams for the 180 length, and you would use a little less than 180 to get 180 C/L. assume around half that length and twice that thickness for the two collars, and you have another 103 grams. Then you have the fillet in either TIG or Brass, and the compression nut assemblies. It could easily go 250 to 300 as suggested.

why dont you make the stem that clamps to the top tube. wouldnt have to be so long then
