Mountain Biking - Two different Deore LX Derailleurs??

Can someone explain the technical differences between these two derailleurs for me please.

Looks like the sgs has different pulley internals. But I have absolutely no idea.......

I think they're both the same... just different finish. One may be from a previous year. Does it matter because the first model is discontinued and out of stock anyways? That's probably why it was cheaper... They were clearing out old stock.

The silver one might be a new 04 model. I know most LX components have been black up till now.

One is silver and one is black :)

since its discontinued.......i am guessing that its leftover stock from the previous years?

I think you're right in that the silver is probably the new 2003 or 2004 model. I however don't remember the previous years' models always being black. Here's a picture of the RD on my wife's 1999 MTB.

Ahhh... I had forgotten about the 7/8 sp DeoreLX stuff. Yes, they were black but with silver cages which is opposite to what the original poster pointed out. But according to the information on the link provided by the original poster, the silver bodied, black cage LX is also an RD-M570 which is 9sp. The 8sp LX was the RD-M567. The initial 7sp version was the RD-M565/563 (RD-M560 just before DeoreLX usurped the DeoreDX position in the lineup and RD-M550 at its introduction) which could actually shift 8sp too if I recall correctly. The older DeoreLX RDs also had a much more rounded body design.

Thanks for your input guys. I'm trying to get a rockhopper (NOT a comp) but I didn't like the derailleurs on it (Deore and Alivio), so that's why I was looking into the Deore LX series. One LBS said that they'll upgrade the parts when I buy the bike and charge me the price difference, no labor charge. Is this usual/unusual? Because all of the other shops wanted to charge me labor for doing the same.

BTW, the Rockhopper comes with an 8spd drivetrain. Will there be complications using a RD-M570 9sp derailleur?

Am I right to assume that the compatibility depends on the shifter and not the derailleur?

no complictions with a 9s derailleur on 8s.

No the 7/8 speed stuff was all silver with black parallellagram's. You also forgot the black and gold limited edition Deore LX der's.
