Road Cycling - What damage have you done in a Crash?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Watching the tour, and seeing Lance go down and crack his (chainstay?) on what really didn't look like a bad crash (for the bike that is- obviously it looks like it could have hurt Lance quite a bit). I was wondering what have you damaged in a crash, and how hard was the crash.

I've had 3 crashes in under a year of riding....probably, no I'm sure, just pushing myself too hard & inexperience- getting smarter....(1 today - not bad just ate crap going across some OLD railroad tracks....my fault :)
My worst crash was last month...3 cracked ribs & a sore body.

Most importantly, the bike is still great and didn't suffer any damage....lol

Just as a note of clarification, according to later reports, the chainstay on Lance's bike wasn't damaged so much from the crash itself (assuming you meant from when he hooked his handlebar on that spectator's bag) as from when Mayo fell and presumably his bike landed on top of the driveside chainstay of Lance's bike and cracked it.

My wife bent her top tube so much it has a flat spot across the top. Also bent a fork blade...

...all done by running it into the garage atop the car (forgot it was on the rack). LOL, sorry.

Seriously though she just moved a brake lever and twisted the handlebar in a crash the sent her over the bars and gave her a concussion.

I have had a closed, displaced, angulated, comminuted fracture of the clavicle. Basically the only way the break could have been any worse is if it had broken through the skin (thank God it didn't!). This occurred almost exactly a week before Tyler broke his. He has been my inspiration throughout my recovery.

The attached picture does not do the injury justice... you shoulda seen it before the surgery! LOL

Ah, thanks for the heads up on that.

I have broken bars, stems, rear derailleurs hangers, bent wheels and bent frames. This what happens over the years of racing. I have never broken a bone, yet. Most of the parts that where broken where light weight racing parts. I have not crashed or broke any parts in the last 5 years, I have also stopped racing.

The bike - one gash about an inch long and a quarter of inch wide on the rim of my new wheel.

Me - elbow, two nasty holes, a rock and too much debris in it to stitch. I still have a purplish, bluish discoloration on my arm. Worst part, I haven't ridden in 8 weeks due to a problem with the ligament. Seeing a hand specialist on Thurs to find out what is wrong.

I've been very lucky with respect to damage to my bike, although I've taken some of my own skin off a couple of times.

Redirected front fork (wheel stayed true! Gotta love those MA3s), opened up cowhorns, snapped crank...but the car got the following:
3 dents in hood (from my NY Chain as I went over it). 4 inch deep dent in passenger side front quarter panel. Fingernail scratches in hood (yes, I did not want to continue over the car...just trying to grab on), and scuff marks on hood from my helmet. And the beauty:
They hit me, I had witnesses, and it was a Porsche 911 - fresh from the Wash-n-Wax.

My physical damage: nothing, just a bit startled

I've broken a chain, snapped a seatpost in half, bent wheels, bent handlebars, and the usual chipped paint and ripped handlebar tape/saddles.

OH, the bike, in more than twenty years of riding, including MTB racing, big trials goofs, and getting smacked by cars twice, I have only damaged a handlebar and pedal, both in slides. Oh, once I destroyed a saddle in a high speed wheelie gone bad. I also totaled a Kz1000 in an off camber left hander turned high side. ( You could not tell it was a motorcycle but I walked away with only a bruise knee)

Bent the big chainring on my MTB trying to go over a nice big rock once. Kind of a dumb thing to do, but I made it over, so the damage was worth the esteem :D Unfortunately, I took it to an LBS and got ripped off. I've since learned to replace my own chainrings... :(

165: Was there a settlement? That'd be ever sweeter!

In a 60+mph downhill attempt to catch a group I hit the curb and broke off the carbon forks of my TREK. Incidently, I also snapped my shoulder in two. My helmet was also history, but it did save my life.

I broke a handlebar in two...luckily the company had a tent set up at the race and was only too happy to immediately replace it with sincere apologies after I appeared in fron of numerous curious customers covered in blood holding their most popular product snapped in two!

2 weeks ago, training ride on a specified Cycling Road, cruising at about 37kph. Lots of leaves on the ground being fall, there was about a 4" high tree stump in the middle of the road but covered by the leaves. Didn't see it, smacked it head on, went flying over the bars about 15ft. Both rims toast, new DA STIs and Ultegra pedals gashed. The flight was actually pretty fun but the landing NOT! Heading back there in the morning with new wheels but now I know where the stump is :D !
