I was looking at a set of wheels at my LBS, trying to decide if I should buy...

Mavic Open Pro rims, Campy Daytona hubs, 32 butted spokes each wheel, $400 Canadian [@ $255 US]. By my math, I think the set is about 1650g-1700g. [Yes, I have a Campy-equipped bike.] I have confidence in this wheelbuilder and a longstanding relationship with the shop. I'm also shopping for a set of fairly light but strong wheels.

Worth it?

I have used Mavic Open4 CDs on Campy Chorus hubs going back about 8 years ago. I loved them, my one bit of advice is to Buy Buy Buy Buy.

Obviously you're very familiar with the Campy bearing smoothness so why are you looking for advice Buy Buy Buy Buy

So that's it, my opinion

Buy Buy Buy Buy Buy Buy Buy

As I thought. Like I said, I have a longstanding relationship with the shop and they throw me deals sometimes. I think this was a cancelled order. They build good wheels there and one of the things I like about the MAvics -- unlike the Campy Protons, which I had been considering -- is I can get at the nipples easy for field adjustments, etc.

Hey, if he has a website, could you forward it? I get into Montreal occasionally, and if the US/Canadian exchange rate is favourable, I might check the shop out.

Martin Swiss Cycles, 313 Victoria, Westmount, QC. (514) 481-3369. Friendly, knowledgeable, competent staff. It's a smallish shop with a good selection. They carry Specialized, GT, Guru, Trek and a few others. If you talk to Steve [the manager], tell him you heard about this from the Internet. :-)

Unfortunately, they don't have a Web site. I am assured that they're working on one, though.

Got the wheels. The definitely weigh about 250g [for the set] less than my Ambrosios]. Turns out they're Chorus hubs.

Great acceleration. And they feel sturdy.
