...who is not named Armstrong, LeMond or Hampsten?
Discuss. This should cause some arguments. :p
My vote was going to be for Peewee Herman, but I have some vague recollection he is originally Canadian (and probably related to DocRay), not American.

I know naught of which this 'seppo' you speak.
"seppo" is rhyming slang for American.
"Yank" rhymes with "Septic Tank".

Based on results over a few seasons, honestly I would have to say Tyler Hamilton.

what part don't you understand?
back OT
Rebecca Twigg, Connie Carpenter, Davis Phinney, and Floyd Landis should get honorable mentions.

Marty Nothstein is a more recent standout.
3 Golds at Worlds, and total domination of the US track scene from 96-01.

if there are 1000's of better american riders, how come there aren't 1000's of americans who've won stages in the Tour, or a Spring classic?

No you can't. I can think of heaps of riders who didn't fulfull their potential. Theres even a whole thread on it here somewhere. The kid will be good but wait for the results to come in. :)

I'm dubious about naming Flandis or Hamilton.
I like the Nothstein, Twigg and Carpenter suggestions. What about Connie Paraskevin-Young?
The road is where its at though. There's Hincapie, Davis Phinney, Keifel, Vaughters, Boyer, Julich......

No way it's Leipheimer, in my mind. I'm a fan, and was rooting for him in the 07 TdF, but he's America's answer to Kloden.
Floyd showed that he was head and shoulders above Leipheimer in '06.

Three Tours and two world championships hardly counts as unfulfilled potential.

No, but the other three or four tours does. What other American lost three tours he shoulda/coulda won?

Coulda shoulda woulda. Its all BS. What about the one in 89 he cheated in to beat Fignon? :p

I could do without the seppo references, it's insulting.

clearly the greatest American bicycle racer is Major Taylor. Who stands in his class? Only Armstrong and LeMond.

I vote for Sheila Young as America's best woman racer.

I would have to say Lemond. He put the US on the map in European cycling. Three TDF's, two world championships. Who wouldn't want his palmares?
Edit: didn't notice Lemond in the OP. I would now consider Phinney.

In England that's called cockney slang.

This thread is a disgrace. It is so disrespectful to our american friends. Classic1 is a total farken buttplug for calling em seppos 'seppos'.
Classic1 doesnt understand the pain and misery the term 'seppo' can cause. Seriously. Somewhere deep deep down inside. He is unedumacated on this. You seppos go easy on him.
Anyway I googled 'best ever american road cyclist' for youse.
Answer came back: Julian Dean (New Zealand).
Enough said......

What about Alf Grenda? Hang on, he was an Aussie. Reggie McNamara? He was an Aussie too.
Seriously, Frank Kramer was a gun Six-Day rider, the best of his era. He'd be up there. Not up at the top, but was a star back in the day.
I'll throw up another one who wasn't the 'best' but deserves a mention. Mike Neel was mixing it in Europe before americans were racing in Europe at the top level. Even had a top 10 in the 1976 Worlds won by Freddy Maertens (finished behind Aussie Don Allan though!) :p
